I wonder what all people who complain about "calling it something other" would say if FF2 would have been called "Stockfish 13", "Stockfish Plus", "UberStockfish" or something else alike. Forks of open-source projects tend to get different or very different names for a reason. I doubt Stockfish developers would feel good about such situation. I am not aware of whether SF / Leela have any trademarks registered, but taking name from open-source project would not just be somehow "good thing to do".

Could it be that we would have been spared from this ongoing thread simply if there was 'Powered by Stockfish' logo somewhere on the (virtual) box of FF2?

If they at least had been able to spell the name Stockfish correctly ...

i assume the only reason SF13 is going to be released now rather than in a few months is to counteract ChessBase marketing comparing FF2 (using SF-dev from January as a base) to SF12. It also applies to rating lists showcasing FF2.

I notice CCRL has tested a recent SF-dev version and has been putting "(in SF)" after FF2's commercial name. That's a good step to avoid people being misled.

Yes, this one on the blitz list - Stockfish 2021-02-11 64-bit 8CPU - is basically Stockfish 13 then because there have been no functional changes since then ?

Yes, I assume so. SF13 should be functionally equivalent to this version. Once the release is done and confirmed, I think it would be fine to use these games for the Stockfish 13 test, with just a small explanatory note.

The best fitting name for this release, as well as most honest and humorous, would have been Fat Fish.
