The values in my ini file are a bit different, but I can't remember now if I changed them myself or they were such before. Anyway, Zarkov 6.55 is an interesting engine. It is about 2650 Elos, about the strength of Gandalf 7, although Gandalf is better in tactical, while Zarkov is better in quiet positions.

Okay, thank you for the reply. I was able to find the info below from John Stanback's website, but I am not sure if any of this data applied to 6.55.
John Stanback wrote:
2. Position Evaluation

For generations chess Grandmasters have written books describing various positional elements which are good and those which are deemed poor. Some of these concepts are relatively simple to program, such as computing piece mobility and detecting doubled or isolated pawns. Other concepts such as piece cooperation or king safety are more difficult to define in strict mathematical terms even though they may be intuitively obvious to a human. The major factor contributing to Zarkov's evaluation is the material value for the pieces on each side. The basic piece values are: Pawn=100, Knight=325, Bishop=335, Rook=540, Queen=1050. Since most moves in a chess game do not lead to the win of material, the move choice is usually governed by the positional chess knowledge contained in the program. Zarkov contains about 100 positional 'heuristics' which are oriented toward developing pieces, creating piece mobility, achieving decent pawn structure, attacking the enemy king, promoting pawns etc... The material value of the pieces as well as the value of the positional bonuses varies depending on the total material remaining on the board. There are two main philosophies employed in computer chess programs:
"Good decisions come from experience, and experience comes from bad decisions."

Confused ...

The file size of both are the same, however if I execute either of them I get the same output. The both say version 650. I downloaded my package from Frank's Webpage, does anyone see the same on there end. Note also that the 655 version has a earlier date than the 650 version.

Same here, and I checked the zip files from Frank's Zarkov download. I guess Frank will answer when he sees this topic -- he is always keen to. One could also notice that the winboard 4.99 version is 6 years younger than the MCS 5.01 version, so, it's a bit confusing.

A simple binary comparison shows that Zarkov 6.50 and 6.55 are indeed different, but with a very tiny difference only.
An educated guess would be that internal renaming was simply forgotten, because the change was so tiny.

(about dates: you cannot rely on given dates, they could have been changed already long ago and the original date might be long gone,
after file operations, like zipping and unextracting, or moving to other HDs or whatever actions)

Thank you Guenther,

I just got around to downloading and installing a Hex Editor. It is indeed as you said. So I just went ahead and edited the binary version name so it would display correctly from the command line.

Anyway, Zarkov 6.55 is an interesting engine. It is about 2650 Elos, about the strength of Gandalf 7, although Gandalf is better in tactical, while Zarkov is better in quiet positions.
I always liked the way Zarkov & Gandalf played. Zarkov was a very positional-type engine. Always solid in its moves.
