So what's the best hardware for chess engines today!

Post by M ANSARI »

Haven't been in the loop for a while and it is time to build a new computer. My last build I had an 8 core Intel which I upgraded the GPU with a 2080Ti card for NN. I see that SF now uses NN network without using a GPU and seems to be doing that well. Always thought that whoever manages to mix NN with Alpha Beta correctly will be the strongest. I plan to keep my 2080 Ti as I think it is plenty of GPU and now I just need a good CPU platform. I know there are 3080 Ti's out there now but I think if SF is doing so well without GPU that there is no need to upgrade that. Is it AMD or Intel that are best for SF at the moment? Also reading up on the Apple M1 chip and that looks extremely interesting as a low power high performance setup ... but if I go Apple I will probably just do it for a laptop.

Anyone make a recent power build recently? Can you share your specs and your thoughts!

Buy the MacBook Pro 16-inch M1 MAX.
It‘s more than amazing.
It‘s more than fast enough.
It‘s completely quiet. You can focus on chess!!
It‘s always cool, even when you have a very very very hot weather.
You can save a lot of money due to much lower watt usage per month and buy every year a new device.
Try also BanksiaGUI with ECA to analyse different things.

You can buy next month (08.03.2022 Apple event) the new MacBook Pro with M2 chip! + It comes also with ARMv9!!

I can't tell if you're serious or making a joke. Hopefully the latter.

I doubt that any of us have to get a better hardware unless you have a computer older than 20 years, My wife told me that when I can proof to her that I can beat Sf or the last version of Komodo, that I can have her permission to get a new computer, because she is sick and tire of every year for me to tell her the same excuse for updating my last year computer.

Note: Again I do not believe that he is making fun of you since he did not posted this video

At this point in time, I'd say may as well wait for the Ryzen 7000 series, H2 2022.

I was thinking the same thing. You will have top of the line at a lot less cost. Low energy and DDR5 also. I plan to get one.
Advanced Micro Devices fan.

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html gives you an idea about how CPUs stack up.

AMD Threadripper 3970x is probably the best thing out there right now in terms of price/performance. It is a beast to cool. Liquid cooling is recommended, although I have managed to make mine run on air.

If price is no object you can go to something up the line from there (3990x, 3995WX or one of the Epyx chips), but that can get crazy expensive.
