I'm really excited to share the first public release of Expositor, which you can find here on Github.
Hi Kade,

the download link for the Windows binaries doesn't seem to include the nnue.

Correct.
So it's Stockfish 13 that first used a neural network? Could be... I forgot. I stuck with Stockfish 10 for playing against, because with 11, the Skill feature got recalibrated in such a way that the lower levels became MUCH stronger, so there is less leeway in available strengths.
It's very unclear to me why you think this is the case. If I copied SF11's evaluation function (prior to NNUE) into a 2100 Elo engine, would it be reasonable to think that's the bare minimum result one could expect from using a hand crafted evaluation function for position evaluation? Obviously not as SF11's evaluation function is basically state of the art in terms of hand crafted evaluation functions. +850 Elo is more like the maximum possible Elo one could expect to gain (if it was grafted onto a stronger engine with more advanced search features, the Elo gain would be smaller due to Elo compression).
That does make some sense; I can imagine that a neural network makes a smaller difference in engines that already have a very good HCE.
A strong HCE is not required to produce training data for a neural network. SlowChess uses self-play training starting from a randomly initialized network for example. Seer uses a retrograde learning approach involving first training a network on EGTB WDL values and subsequently backing up the results to higher piece count positions by way of self-play play outs from N -> N-1 man positions.
That is what I said; you can bootstrap your own engine, even by starting out with PST's only. Then add features, generate data, tune, add features, generate data, tune... and so on. It will take a lot longer than starting from a "known-good" data-set scored by a very strong engine.

Hi Graham! The network is bundled with each binary; the executables run standalone. The "EvalFile" UCI option can be left unset and Expositor will use her default, built-in network (currently 512x8-lt15).

I decided to put separate copies of the networks in the source repository so that someone can run future versions of Expositor with older networks if they want. The source repository also contains PNGs of the first and second hidden layers for anyone who is curious.

SF12 was the first stockfish to use a neural network. There were a number of other engines, including Fizbo 2 (NN eval with avx2 in 2017), that preceded it by quite a bit.
Fat Titz by Stockfish, the engine with the bodaciously big net. Remember: size matters. If you want to learn more about this engine just google for "Fat Titz".

Yep!

If your AMD machine supports AVX2, I'd suggest expo-amd-avx2 instead of expo-amd-avx+bmi.* The last two sections of https://github.com/expo-dev/expositor/b ... extensions might be helpful for making that decision; if you tell me the models of the processors you're using, I can also give you a more specific answer.

*AMD processors that have AVX2 will automatically have support for BMI, but AMD processors that only have AVX may or may not have support for BMI, which is why there is both expo-amd-avx and expo-amd-avx+bmi.

Can you send me a copy of the command you're entering and the panic message you're getting? The panic I suspect you are getting is intentional, to prevent myself (or anyone else) from continuing when I think I've loaded a different network but haven't actually (e.g. because I made a typo).

It might be worth pointing out that Expositor is only compatible with networks trained by Expositor – there is no standard NNUE format. Also, the 256x16-lt10 net does not work without changing constants `N1` and `N2` in the source and rebuilding. I'll make a note to either remove it from the repository or add instructions explaining how to do so; my apologies if that's the source of the confusion.
