Question about new laptop for chess

Hello

Im looking for a new laptop that I will use primarily for chess. I have looked at an HP Envy with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800u 16Gb ram and it have a not to bad price.

But i tested it with the newest stockfisk and with 1 thread it gave around 1.8M nps - 4 threads around 4.2M nps and 8 threads it gave 8.6M nps

That is not too bad but when i tried with 12 and 16 threads it didnt give much more, 16 threads was around 9.3M nps - how can that be ?

Is it because of the size of the net and cache or something else (bandwidth problems etc.)

And which budget amd cpu is considered the best for chess ?

With 8 cores, you would use 8 threads for chess. Additional threads will share a core with a different thread and use up any spare time while the first thread waits for something, like disk I/O.

A chess program running at full speed is already using all the cores at near maximum capacity, so there is not much slack for the extra threads to use. As you saw, there are just a few extra percent to squeeze out.

Not that I can help...you don't exactly 'say' what you are going to be using it for as concerns chess. I mean, that is kind of important.

Ahh yes sorry for that, mostly for analysing my own games and having a chess database on (HCE Pro) although I would probably try to revive my old defunct chess program at some point .....

Maybe because it's a laptop, so the performance at sustained full load depends on the cooling solution.

In general, if you aim for a Ryzen 5000 laptop for chess, do make sure that you get an "even" Ryzen model such as 5800U because that's Zen3 with much faster PDP/PEXT instructions which are important for chess. "Odd" models such as 5700U are still Zen2, so avoid them.

To me it's a bit strange the 5800U numbers, I would expect more difference between 8 and 16 threads.

Here are the numbers for a ryzen 5 4600H 6 cores/12 threads:

1 thread --> 1.5 Mnps
6 threads --> 9 Mnps
12 threads --> 13.6 Mnps

1 thread --> 1.9 Mnps
8 threads --> 13.7 Mnps
16 threads --> 20.5 Mnps
