Hi to all!

I'm really confused about openings book management on BSG. Since Pham seems actually very distant from this project, maybe somebody else could help me.

In tournaments often the exact same opening is played, even if I choose -1 as random option. With my trick to start a new tournament, delete opening path, restart tournament, stop tournament, reload old one from Recent tournaments, I has able to change this behavior. This workaround doesn't work anymore. BSG plays always 1.b3 b6 2.Bb2 Bb7 also changing opening book on every engine, unflagging book on overall parameters, using PGN, EPD, or bin books, pressing "reset openings for all games" on edit tournament panel. Luckily this opening leads to +-0.0x position evaluation, but is really boring.

Does somebody know how to change this behavior in current tournament?
I would simply have a minimal varied balanced opening book to randomize a little the games, NOT huge optimized libraries for a specific engine 50 full moves .bin . I want to test engines, not books

Hi Alex,
.bin books never worked for me, I also have ever the same opening so I use .pgn books and this is working correct. I don't know if you can change this in a running tournament.

I try. Which FEN | PGN opening book you suggests? (little, varied and balanced)

Finally managed at least to disable on my current tournament the 2 moves book playing always the same 1.b3 b6 2.Bb2 Bb7 opening. Also completely deleting the book files, it stores the opening data somewhere and it was playing the same boring variation on every new game :o But since I'm testing engines perfectly able to play theoretical moves without book, I like to test them also during this phase.

Thanks again, for my next tournament I will use PGN and FEN books.

Yes but you could write something nice to the developer and thank him for his development.
Maybe then he will work more active on this project.

I know that Pham is very busy and far from this project.

But I've still issues with opening book settings. BSG sometimes play the same opening .BIN or it doesn't load overall books and it thinks since the first move, using both .PGN or .BIN. It doesn't swap colors (I want play same opening for white and black) also if the option is checked. If i set -1 for maximum variety, nothing apparently changes. I'd really need a tutorial with all the options related to each book setup with screenshots and I think it would be useful for all users.

Actually I'm using Stockfish's 8moves_v3.bin (max 4 moves) to randomize a little the openings. If I disable all books, engines very often play a Spanish with 4...Nf6, so insn't a good workaround.

I would like to have a minimal book library of 4 full moves (same couple of openings each time, varied and balanced with +-0.30 pawn score) to randomize the games of my tournaments / tests.

I've tried a lot of PGN and BIN books, but occasionally an engine exits the book with a +- 0.70 pawn score that compromises overall results...

PGN settings and neutral books suggested?
