Hi to all.
I am beginning a new challenge.
I am taking a handicap of two bishops against Crafty, Komodo, Lc0 and Stockfish (the engines that can be downloaded directly within Banksia).
I will play until I win one game against each engine.
All default settings, except:
All engines with ponder on.
Crafty with resign = 327.66
Komodo with contempt = 150
(if you have a suggestion to improve this settings, feel free to write it).
I played the first game against Crafty yesterday.
I doubted about playing 12... Qb3 (exchanging queens), as I realized that I would be losing a pawn (my main option was 12... Bc5). But I thought, I am two bishops up... I should not be worrying about a pawn.
I still do not know how to prevent Crafty from resigning. I did set up resign = 327.66
After 54. Kg1, Crafty's evaluation is -327.61 (still five centipawns from the resign setting).
Anyway, it was mate in two from the final position, I will assume that I would have actually delivered mate (instead of stalemating Crafty).

Re: Two-Bishop odds match: human vs engines.
Hi.
Now, the game against Komodo.
A win for me.
After 4. Nc3, I decided to go for 4... b4. This way, the white knight is either forced to the edge (where it is out of play, and easy to exchange when the time comes), or to go back, losing tempo.
My bishop on b7 was not particularly well placed, but it is better to have it somewhere on the board.
I felt confident about the win after the queen exchange. But even a few moves before that I was optimistic, when I realized that Komodo would not be able to challenge the b-file (the only open file). If it tried Rb3, I had a4 in hand.

Re: Two-Bishop odds match: human vs engines.
Not that it is my business, but why don't you just find an adequate level of Dragon or Komodo (or any other engine) and play normal chess? Maybe I am wrong, but it seems to me that this way you mostly get better in trading pieces without damaging your position way too much.

Re: Two-Bishop odds match: human vs engines.
Both methods of training have pros and cons; when I play against Dragon, sometimes I play it at a suitable Elo setting in normal chess, other times I play it at full strength with knight odds. The Elo setting is obviously a much better simulation of a human opponent, so that is a strong plus point, but just like a human, it is inconsistent, sometimes it will miss tactics that I can see, other games it won't. So the results seem to depend more on Dragon (or more precisely whether I can reach positions that make it miss tactics), whereas with knight odds at full strength it will always play so far beyond my level that there will never be a chance of winning due to computer error, it just comes down to whether my technique is good enough to win the winning positions. So for simulating human play, the Elo method is best, but if your problem is failure to win from winning positions then the odds method is the solution.Fritz 0 wrote: ↑Wed May 11, 2022 11:27 am Not that it is my business, but why don't you just find an adequate level of Dragon or Komodo (or any other engine) and play normal chess? I am doing it for fun (that is, I am not trying to improve my chess, but I realize that some regular chess activity helps).
Actually, I also want to play against weakened engines, but Chess960 instead of "normal" chess.
Oh, and I also want to play with smaller odds, but from endgame positions, and so on.
About trading pieces without damaging my position... ¡it is more difficult that it looks like!
In particular, Komodo poses some kind of threat almost every move. I have to be on guard, even if objectively the position should be an "easy" win (it might be easy for an international master or grandmaster, but not for an amateur player).
Also, I am not primarily trying to exchange pieces (I think Chessqueen does that). I am trying to activate my pieces without creating too many weaknesses. Inevitably, some exchanges do occur, and with each one there are less chances of me blundering.
Greetings.

Re: Two-Bishop odds match: human vs engines.
Hi.
After a long break, the game against Lc0.
A win for me.
Lc0 kept sacrificing pawns (in addition to the two bishop odds), and did not allow me to develop in the first moves.
I was somewhat worried, and had to use a lot of time to make sure I was not blundering into mate or a big material loss.
Fortunately, I was able to parry all the threats.

I believe that playing with a Knight Odds or even Bishop odds plus removing a pawn from Komodo would be more challenging for you and for us to witness since you have already proven to beat Komodo 12.1 with a Rook odds, or simply set Komodo to Skill level 14 or other skill Level that match your strength.pepechuy wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 3:28 am Hi.

Most likely you are right.
But I do not want to play endless challenges.
Let me finish these ones (two minor pieces), then I will look for a more even challenge.

Hi.
Now, the game against Stockfish.
A win for me.
Stockfish was the only engine to go for a very early castling.
I had to play carefully, but this game was not as difficult as the previous ones. I finished with more than 11 minutes left on the clock (in the final moves, Stockfish was playing almost only on the increment).

So, this challenge is over in only one round.
The next challenge is two-knight odds. I expect it to be more difficult. Lets see.
I plan to use the same settings.
Greetings.

Re: Two-Bishop odds match: human vs engines.
You should try to beat bagatur for android at level 5, which is about your strength if you can beat Komodo 12.1 with a Rook Odds, since Bagatur for android at level 5 can also beat Komodo 12.1 with a Rook Odds https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... n_US&gl=USpepechuy wrote: ↑Wed May 18, 2022 12:05 amHi.Chessqueen wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 10:44 am
I believe that playing with a Knight Odds or even Bishop odds plus removing a pawn from Komodo would be more challenging for you and for us to witness since you have already proven to beat Komodo 12.1 with a Rook odds, or simply set Komodo to Skill level 14 or other skill Level that match your strength.
Most likely you are right.
But I do not want to play endless challenges.
Let me finish these ones (two minor pieces), then I will look for a more even challenge.
Greetings.
