Reboot: rook odds match, human vs engines.

Post by pepechuy »

Hi.

I am taking another rook odds challenge, but only against Komodo and Stockfish.
Komodo's contempt = 150
Both engines with ponder on.
Other than that, default settings.

I will play until I win a game against each engine with each extra rook (a1 and h1).

I lost the first game against Komodo, taking the a1 rook.
Komodo played 1. e3, which is somewhat weird, but not bad.
Actually, I felt I had a very good position out of the opening, but somehow managed to complicate it and lose.
Key moves I missed:
14. Ne5
24. Bc5
When I played 24... Qc5, I calculated until 31. Kh2 and intended to play 31... e2, which loses to 32. Qc2
Had I seen that on move 24, I would have played 24... Qe3
I still do not find a way to resign in Banksia.

You encourage me to challenge Komodo Dragon 2.6.1 Contempt = 150 with a1 Rook odds, it was a real challenge and I enjoyed it.
It is Okay I really do NOT need it since I have Komodo Dragon 2.6.1, where I can can simply set the Elo from 200 thru 3500 but for those people that downloaded the free version of Komodo 13. 0 they need to know. Anyway I decided to test myself against Komodo Dragon with the a1 Rook missing.

Note: I believe that Komodo version 13.02 set at Contempt =150 with the same a1 Rook Odds play a little bit stronger than Komodo Dragon 2.6.1; I will play in the next 30 minutes after I get a little rest and eat. :roll:

Hi.

Now, the first game against Stockfish, taking the h1 rook.
A loss for me, I am still having a hard time believing it...
This game is a proof that we need to play carefully, even in "easily" won positions.

Stockfish allowed an early queen exchange... after that, it should be an easy win.
I missed 33. Nf5
Objectively, Stockfish still sees me with a big advantage, but the game was already out of my control.
Of course, I saw that I could keep an extra knight on move 36, but I was already looking for a draw; White's pawns looked too menacing for me.
I do not understand why I played 43... Kf7 and 45... Kf7 (instead of Ke7). Ok, the position is still drawn, but Ke7 gives basically no chances to Stockfish, other than repeat the position.
Finally, 51... Rh7 is just a losing blunder.
With more time on the clock, I think I could have forced the draw several moves earlier.

I got a draw versus almighty Stockfish with the h1 Rook Odds or missing

I was reading my daughter 8 years old Chess Life Kids April issue Magazine page #6 and finally after reading more than 22 Chess Books assigned by my online IM chess trainer, I found the best advice of what to ask yourself every time it is your turn to move. 1st question What does my opponent want to achieve with his last move?, 2nd question What are the weaknesses for both sides? and finally 3rd question which is my worse placed piece and try to place it on the best square possible. I guess it is working so far. :roll:

Now I am going to experiment with Komodo 13.2 set at skill = 13 which should be rated around 2000, but I will remove the c7 pawn or c7 pawn Odds. I do NOT expect anybody to answer since I am only testing to see if Komodo 13.2 with the c7 removed is more difficult to beat than Komodo Dragon 2.6.1 Contempt = 150 with the a1 Rook Removed which I already played and posted it here.

I do NOT expect anybody to answer since I am only testing to see if Komodo 13.2 with the c7 removed is more difficult to beat than Komodo Dragon 2.6.1 Contempt = 150 with the a1 Rook Removed which I already played and posted it here.

Komodo 13,2 set up at Skill Level 12 which I do NOT know exactly that Elo Komodo 13.2 is playing at that Skill Level, but here is the game without handicap. I read my daughter 8 years old Chess Life Kids April issue Magazine page #6 and finally after reading more than 22 Chess Books assigned by my online IM chess trainer, I found the best advice of what to ask yourself every time it is your turn to move. 1st question What does my opponent want to achieve with his last move?, 2nd question What are the weaknesses for both sides? and finally 3rd question which is my worse placed piece and try to place it on the best square possible. I guess it is working so far

Hi.

Nice game. Eventually, I will win against Komodo and Stockfish... one rook is quite a handicap.

Of course, your coach is right.
However, sometimes we reach the point where we are:
-tired;
-low on time;
-overconfident;
-or something else
and we make mistakes that are below our playing strength.

Greetings.

Hi.

Now, the first game against Komodo, taking the h1 rook.
According to the pgn, after move 39 Komodo lost on time.
BUT:
1. I thought engines did not lose on time (certainly not with a 10 second increment).
2. Banksia shows White with still 13 seconds on its clock (I had 3:03 in the final position).
I do NOT feel satisfied winning on time. Especially, since the game was getting interesting, I had just sacrificed my queen for a rook and knight.
I still had material advantage (two rooks and a knight for the queen), as well as an excellent position (at least according to me), but there is still a very long way until checkmate.
¿How can I continue the game? From that position, with the remaining clock times.
