Looks better now ...

Step 1:
Load your output.pgn in Hiarcs Chess Explorer
Save as new pgn

Step 2:
CleanUp PGN by Norm Pollock.

Ah ... I have a mistake in the PGN files from my current "run-6".
I forget to set the information "run-6", now all the games have the information "run-5".
I am so crazy. I have to stop my tourney and have to make a corretion in Shredder *.sto file.

Shit, shit, 3x shit.
Later ...

Best
Frank

Looks great Ferdinand.
I will try now "sort" and bigger *.pgn files later this evening.
At first the correction in my still running tourney!

A new tool ... very, very nice!

Best
Frank

Forget it ... not a good idea.
After Hiarcs Chess Explorer and the tool by Norm Pollock the ECO code is wrong.

PGN code looks strange but readable.

Have a look here ...

Is this file really OK?
I believe I made a mistake!

The eco that I am revising has string at the top like below.
{
A PGN file of ECO classifications distributed with the PGN extraction
program, pgn-extract. I believe that the original file from which I
generated this was put together by Ewart Shaw, Franz Hemmer and others,
to whom appropriate thanks and acknowledgement is due. Permission has
been granted for its inclusion with the pgn-extract program, which is
available from:
https://www.cs.kent.ac.uk/~djb/pgn-extract/

David J. Barnes (d.j.barnes@kent.ac.uk)
}
I agreed with David not to remove this comment in my revised eco.pgn.

Re: The strongest engines ... for opening analyzes ... statistic!

Hi Ferdi,

delete the file from my server and made an update.
Now the same in my directory as your file on github ... it works.

The sort feature I will try out in in the afternoon and looking more in detail.

You do really a great work again, all is very easy!
This is a very important tool.

Be careful with that eco.pgn, it is undergoing a lot of changes. Here is one of the tasks in my priority, fill up missing variation names.
One technique I use to find the variation name is to search the earliest recorded game in history and get the player name that made the move. If Capablanca played that move the variation name will be:
[Variation "Capablanca"]
Sometimes I use both white and black names,
[Variation "Steinitz-Neumann"] especially when ply count is high and both players follow the line.

This can be automated after collecting some old games like 1960 and older. So whenever the variation name is missing, look it up in old games, get the player names and use it as variation name.

The list from eco.pgn at the moment with missing variations when ply is 6 or more.

It can happen that the variation name is already there but in a wrong place like:

Code: Select all

    ECO Opening Variation PlyCount
81 D01 Richter-Veresov attack, Veresov variation None 7
So this just needs reformatting like moving the Veresov in the variation tag value.

I am also introducing a new opening format, use names of those players that played the game earlier.

Code: Select all

[Opening "Levenfish/Trompowsky/Ruth"]
Normally this is Trompowsky, but after searching the old games it was Levenfish that played first the 2. Bg5 after 1. d4 Nf6 in the line 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5. So in the current eco.pgn I have that header. Later I will go over the whole list and check other multi opening names and use that kind of format . Everyone will be happy no one is left out.

Re: The strongest engines ... for opening analyzes ... statistic!

Most missing Variation names from 6 to 12 plies games in eco.pgn are now supplied with player names based from old games (1950 and older from chessbase database). This is not yet committed in eco repo.

Re: The strongest engines ... for opening analyzes ... statistic!

Post by Frank Quisinsky »

Hi Ferdinand,

sort feature is working fine.
I added the important links in my link selection.

Links:
https://www.amateurschach.de/main/_comparable.htm

A lot of work with all the names of openings.
I have here many chess books and if I saw all the differents with names for openings ...
A big chaos!

From Joachim-Beyer Verlag ...
A00-E99 from the year 2012 (German language book).

Very simply what we can find here.
Eric Schiller do for many years a strong work here, much better books from him are available.

Very nice is the book by Samarian ...
Internationales Schlüsselbuch der Schacheröffnungen.

Best work about it ...
Small Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings (Sahovski) and the bigger versions from it to A, B (two books), C, D, E is available.
A great CD from the latest version of Small Encyclopaedia (2019, 3 Edition) is also available.

If you are ready you should write a chess book about this work.
Such books with overviews are very popular ...
And your tool can be available on CD.

Means, if you not do that ... your work can be found in other books later ... loud thinking.

Best
Frank
