Recommendation for new PC?

Post by gordonr »

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a new PC purely for doing chess analysis. I've been looking at various reviews and benchmarks online but wanted to ask here for specific chess analysis opinions. Up until now I've always stuck with Intel but was looking at AMD too. I use a lot of the top engines and occasionally run LC0 so a good graphics card would be useful too.

I don't know how complete or up-to-date this Fritz benchmark site is: http://www.jens-hartmann.at/Fritzmarks/

Two initial candidates are systems based on the following CPUs: Intel i9 14 core 10940X @ 3.3 Ghz; or AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 16 core @ 3.4 Ghz.

If it helps, I'm ordering in the UK and looking to spend roughly £2000 to £3000.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Gordon,
Because of the quick rising costs of energy (+95% here in Austria) I would prefer the Ryzen 9. It is very efficient and if you optimize it with Hydra from Yuri Bubliy much more. As GPU the Asus RTX 3070 Noctua edition. Ram 32-64Gb.

regards
William
Ryzen 5900x, 64GB Ram, RTX3080, 2x 2TB SSD, 1x 1TB SSD, 1x 2TB HDD, all custom watercooled, Win10 and Win7 Multiboot, Win98/Windows Millennium/WinXP virtual machines for 16bit

It’s strong.
It’s quiet.
You can say it needs no watt when you compare it to AMD and Intel.
You can use macOS, Windows 11 and Linux.

I tested a Macbook Pro M1 for a week from a friend as he was on holiday. All I can say is the performance for Chess is slow and I didn't get Lc0 to work after some hours fiddling around with it. Maybe there is a working version now but it will also be much slower than a real Gpu. There is a big thread here - forum3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=75911 . Also google "Lc0 on mac". So if you didn't need top performance for chess a Mac look realy nice. Scroll down in the benchmark list for Mac.

You should use Homebrew first if you can’t compile LC0.

Scan Computers in Bolton is a good choice and I'd go with the 5950X which will poop all over a MacBook. If you can wait a few months next gen AMD will be out (7000 series, Genoa) and will be faster again.

Thanks everyone for your help - really appreciated. I think I will go for the AMD 5950X.

If I do go for this, should I keep hyperthreading on or off in the BIOS? Do people sometimes find a benefit to running more threads than physical cores?

Good choice.
This isn't a perfect comparison by any means, but here are some Cinebench R23 CPU scores for interest:

Threadripper 3990X - 75671
Ryzen 5950X - 28782
Apple M1 Ultra (Mac Studio only) - 21740
Intel 10940X - 21309
Apple M1 Max (MacBook Pro) - 12422
Apple M1 Pro (MacBook Pro) - 12170
