Stockfish vs ChessBase hearing a “meh” affair

Post by dkappe »

Main takeaways:

1. Another hearing in a year.
2. Withdrawal of license (if valid) would be restricted to SF13.
3. Some scheme proposed to have CB ask SF for permission to publish new engines based on SF. (Noob proposing to act in bad faith by always refusing permission. Someone stuff a sock in that guy’s mouth.)

Overall, this won’t be a good GPL precedent as the court didn’t really understand the concept of continuous development.

Stay tuned for round 2 in 2023.

Good guys win in the end. Court of law takes a while to catch up to the court of public opinion. Until then, what happens? Well Stockfish team continues to generously put out a high quality product free of charge and sharing their code with a minimal ask. ChessBase team continues to sell knock-off products to the ever-shrinking number of people who still respect them. Dkappe team continues to simp for Albert on forums. Noob continues to troll anyone who will talk to him.

Run from what, Guenther Queen?

Do you have anything informative to add, or you’re just trolling?

I’m curious as to what my “team” is. Can I list them on my taxes? :D

On a more serious note, the restricting of the withdrawal of the license to just SF13 would be a bad precedent. Makes no sense.

I may be wrong but I don't think Chessbase will ever do something like this again with SF as a base. Knowing that future legal action is a possibility will dissuade them. If this legal action achieves anything it will be that. Looking back, Fat Fritz 2 seems to be a pointless product and I wasted my time running it.

With GPL, you simply "approve" yourself by fulfilling the obligations, this is autonomous until you get terminated for repeated violations.

And nobody is going to bless you for your own sake of the compliance, you do that yourself or consult some auditing service(there are such organizations which does exactly that). As for a terminated status, it is possible to ask for a re-instantiation, which the copyright holder can rightfully deny with all due respect to his rights without getting morally blackmailed by dkappe.

So there is that.

All people are doing it backwards, I can guarantee you that Fat Fritz 2's sales increased after all this by people buying it just to know what all the fuzz was about.

And perhaps this was the plan from the beginning, all publicity is good publicity, chessbase's people could be master geniuses, and they even put the catchy name on the horse, specially to be exposed to people that didn't even know chessbase existed, but now they'll check others of their products.
Your beliefs create your reality, so be careful what you wish for.
