"I greatly respect Carlsen and I respect and accept his decision. One thing is for certain though: once the tournament has been completed, he will no longer be the world chess champion."
Technically you are right but everyone will acknowledge that he is still the strongest player alive today and in the back of their minds they know he is a WC in strength. Anytime someone vacates their spot and they were the best. It is always on people's minds - Magnus Carlsen

Totally agreed...to which I would add that this would allow a series of matches as it once was. Sadly, the whole idea of a title match every 2 years was born out of the never ending desire to 'mainstream' chess. The law of 'unintended consequences' you might say...Uri Blass wrote: ↑Wed Jul 20, 2022 6:56 pm I think that when there is a match for the title every year it is natural that the champion does not want to defend his title.
The FIFA World Cup is only one time in 4 years
so I think it is better to have a chess championship match every 4 years and there are better chances that carlsen will have no problem to defend his title.

I also believe that the World Chess championship should be defended every other year, so that the Title holder does NOT get burned out, and the Price should be raised to twice as much making it more desirable to defend.Uri Blass wrote: ↑Wed Jul 20, 2022 6:56 pm I think that when there is a match for the title every year it is natural that the champion does not want to defend his title.

Note: I know that GM Nepo had an unbelievable performance during the last candidate, but I feel that if GM Ding Liren had traveled two days earlier to the match site he would have been more relax for the first game that he lost due to Jet lag traveling. My money will go to GM Ding Liren to become the Next World Champion, and GM Carlsen would be more motivated to challenge him being that GM Liren is over 2800.

One thing is certain - the most unhappy person in the world at the moment is Nakamura. I think I would draw that against Ding. (Of course I wouldn't, but still...)

It is better this way, GM Nakamura played too fast so he deserve to lose to GM Ding Liren, by now Nakamura should know the difference between playing Blitz and serious chess that requires every little bit of finding all possible moves of his enemy. Anyway, here is the interview of Magnus ==>

In todays world he (Carlsen) can always self identify as a female and play for the women's title!
Wouldn't that be a 1st!

I do not know about a single top chess male player who identify as a female.AdminX wrote: ↑Fri Jul 22, 2022 12:31 pm In todays world he (Carlsen) can always self identify as a female and play for the women's title!Wouldn't that be a 1st!

I also think that it is unfair if somebody who was a male identify as a female in order to participate in women events in some sport.
I guess that many trans like Caitlyn Jenner are also against participation of trans in women's events.
I know at least she was against Lia Thomas when Lia Thomas wanted to compete against women in swimming.

Carlsen said earlier that he was only interested in playing if his challenger was Firouzja, who actually did very poorly in the Candidates. He is a formidable player, but he was too aggresive and took too many risks against the top level players he was up against. With more experience though he has a good chance to qualify in another cycle.
