Progress on Blunder

So I actually discovered a pretty glaring bug in the transposition table. Basically, the way I was resetting the global age used to replace old entries meant that the age never changed, so throughout an entire game, the transposition table would slowly start to get clogged up with deeper and deeper entries, which would never be replaced as their current age would always match the age of every previous search. I fixed this issue and re-ran a quick match versus Leorik 2.2.

Although from doing some logging, this issue as described was fixed, it didn't seem to fix Blunder's weakness against Leorik 2.2, and Blunder scored just as badly as in previous matches, more than 100 Elo weaker. And from investigating the PGN file, Blunder was still showing oddly low search depths with oddly high search times, as before. So although I fixed this bug, this didn't seem to be causing the massive strength disparity.

Given that the strength difference is so high, though, I suspect that the bug is still something that should be quite discoverable since it would account for making Blunder 100 Elo weaker against an opponent it should be fairly evenly matched against, even at hyper bullet time controls.

So about ~30K nodes more were expected to have been searched, which I think does point towards your first point that something else was happening besides just searching nodes. I did notice from the logging as well that several researches (4 to be exact) had to be done because of the aspiration windows, which could be part of the reason as well.

I suppose the only good news is that this is a very frequent bug, and only several games can be played at most before it crops up, so at least in a sense, I can keep reproducing it to continue logging more information.

I don't think it's the aspiration windows now though. After looking at more logging, there are several cases where no researches were performed, yet for whatever reason Blunder got "stuck" at a low depth even after searching for several hundred milliseconds. Further instances however do show that all of the typical search statistics are quite poor when compared to what Blunder should be getting. For instance in this position:

Blunder spent more than 400ms and got stuck at a depth of 8, searching ~130K nodes. Giving the same position to Blunder fresh, after priming the transposition table with previous positions, it reached a depth of 11 having searched ~470K nodes, more than 3x the amount of nodes from the faulty search. And in both cases no researches occurred due to failing aspiration windows.

Go is a garbage collected language, right? Could the slowdown be caused from garbage-collector activity? You could try to trigger the GC manually on regular intervals (e.g. after a bestmove is send) and see if it prevents the occasional slow searches.

Yes, that's correct. The slowdown could be, I probably could do some profiling to see. In the meantime, trying to manually call the GC regularly doesn't sound like a bad idea, so I'll try that I suppose. Although I'm not sure how much it'll help as most recent go versions use a sort of concurrent garbage collection model.

While I still haven’t made much progress towards fixing this issue, I do have an idea of what might be happening.

A while back when I first implemented transposition tables on Blunder, I encountered a strange issue where low depth searches where taking ridiculously long amounts of time to complete. In some cases a one depth search wasn’t able to be completed in under a couple hundred ms. Through some investigation I discovered transposition table storing and probing were the issue: forum3/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=77898&p=9016 ... b6#p901665

I never was able to figure out what was causing that issue, and I think for whatever reason moved on and focused on testing at longer time controls to mitigate the effect. Which of course would mean that the problem wouldn’t actually be fixed, just masked as a different form.

This explanation would match all of the odd behaviors documented. It would explain why it wasn’t constantly happening, and it would explain why a seemingly normal search would spike so heavily. A transposition store or probe operation taking several hundred milliseconds like I discovered it was those months ago would definitely mean Blunder would only be able to reach a depth of 7-8 occasionally. And it would also explain why 8.45, 8.00, and 7.60 all have the same issue, since the issue started when I introduced a transposition table into Blunder, around version 5.0.0, and all of the aforementioned versions inherit the baseline transposition table code.

So for now I’ll try to revisit the issue I encountered then and, going with this assumption, figure out what’s off about my transposition implementation.

Failing making any progress, I’ll probably just take a break from working on the issue for a while, since there’s no point in wasting my time and energy banging my head over a problem I’m making no progress on

Well, it seems my hunch was correct.

After adding a little bit of code to log the total time taken when storing and probing the transposition table, it's clear that whenever there's a spike in a low-depth search's time, there's also an oddly high spike in the time it takes to store and probe transposition table entries. I was able to reproduce this situation several times.

Anytime a low-depth search occurred that took longer than a couple of hundred milliseconds, Blunder logged that it often spent several hundred milliseconds storing and probing the transposition table. And when I re-run the same position through Blunder, after priming the transposition table with any previous positions, Blunder logs that it usually spent no more than 40-50 ms on transposition table storing and probing - a negligible amount of time.

And of course, this also makes sense in explaining why 8.45, 8.00, and 7.60 all were encountering the same issue and why this issue wasn't affecting Blunder too much at longer time controls like those used on the CCRL - taking several hundred milliseconds to store and probe the transposition throughout a search matters a lot more when you only have 500ms to search vs 30000ms.

So it seems my laziness of not solving the issue I encountered several months has come back to bite me in the ass now I need to investigate why my code for probing and storing in the table is randomly spiking in performance. At least I know why these low-depth searches are happening now, which makes me a bit more pleased.

I can tell you that there are very weird things going on ;-)
Sometimes it just is blind for the answer move of Leorik, or doesn't suggest what was played in the game.
Sometimes it just repeats the answer move from hash in the PV stuck enormously long and so on
still w/o considering the move to come or alternatives.
(I always used the same hash size now as you in those games = 16MB for all tests on this game/positions)

Very early it settles on 7. Nc3 and the expected answer 7...Be7 neglecting the natural 7...d4
After making the move 7. Nc3 on the board it gets incredible stuck in analysis with 7...Be7 and after 50 ms
there is zero output anymore for 260 seconds! I first thought it crashed.
WB was begging for output all along (sending '.') and finally after over 61M nodes it put another PV
with 7...Bf5, but d4 (Leoriks move) was never considered.
Next two plies similar things happened (not that extreme though, but again with moves from hash
and not considered replies and the game very early was lost, even when Leorik could have played
d3! one move earlier.
I am not completely sure when the tactical horizon with inbetween possible Nc7+ was too high
and what other programs of similar strength think here, but it seems even that a few plies later
it should have realized, but I don't know why it didn't.

BTW it is possible that 8.55 here does already better than 8.45 because FWIW it seems 8. Na4 according
to SF15 might be the last equalizing move and 8.55 might play it perhaps.

Very early it settles on 7. Nc3 and the expected answer 7...Be7 neglecting the natural 7...d4
After making the move 7. Nc3 on the board it gets incredible stuck in analysis with 7...Be7 and after 50 ms
there is zero output anymore for 260 seconds! I first thought it crashed.
WB was begging for output all along (sending '.') and finally after over 61M nodes it put another PV
with 7...Bf5, but d4 (Leoriks move) was never considered.
Next two plies similar things happened (not that extreme though, but again with moves from hash
and not considered replies and the game very early was lost, even when Leorik could have played
d3! one move earlier.
I am not completely sure when the tactical horizon with inbetween possible Nc7+ was too high
and what other programs of similar strength think here, but it seems even that a few plies later
it should have realized, but I don't know why it didn't.

Thanks. That's definitely an issue, as d4 should be well within Blunder's horizon. I imagine what's happening is that for whatever reason d4 is getting pruned or reduced away, and I'll need to investigate why.

Probably the most glaring weakness Blunder still has is the poor tuning of its sub-optimal margins and reductions. The majority of values I have in the engine are either from gut feeling or very quick testing to get a rough value. So I need to spend some time anyway working on tuning those better.

BTW it is possible that 8.55 here does already better than 8.45 because FWIW it seems 8. Na4 according
to SF15 might be the last equalizing move and 8.55 might play it perhaps.

Hmm, perhaps so. I need to check the commit logs, but I think the only change between 8.55 and 8.45 was I improved the time management scheme.

Either way, thanks for all the extra work you're doing with Blunder! I now have a couple of issues to work on. Firstly the weird hashtable efficiency spikes, and then the stuff you presented here.

I wonder if the hashtable weirdness has something to do with a weird Golang quirk, or I have a bug somewhere. The transposition table is probably one of the areas I've been over the most in Blunder, many times with a fine-toothed comb looking for issues. So it'd be hard for me to see it being a bug. But I need to look at the code more closely and read up on the exact Golang specs to maybe get an idea. I'll likely also do a little investigating with some other Golang engines like Zahak, Counter, Combusken, and Zurichess to see if I notice any parallels between them and my engine.

Worst case scenario I'll need to strip Blunder's search down again to the bare-bones, and build it back up again slowly, being careful to tune things to avoid frequent search explosions
