The Geekbench score is "impressive" - link.
I know people say that Geekbench is not a good chess indicator - but the extremes will make the correlation "good" (a slow computer will get low scores on both chess and Geekbench, whereas a fast computer will get high scores on both).

Search the forum. There is a long thread about how bad the M1 (and given the overheating not so much better M2) does for both Stockfish and LC0 type engines. Overhype, overpriced. Geekbench is a severely flawed static benchmark that tries to make "cross platform" comparisons. It mostly overrates ARM-type CPUs compared to real-life gaming, chess, graphics etc.dangi12012 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 27, 2022 10:28 pm Are there any people here that have M1 and M2?

If you want "real" relevant benchmarks then look for https://openbenchmarking.org/ benchmarks they even have stockfish 15 as an official benchmark!!
The only decent M1 version is the M1 Ultra but the price for a system is in 3990x +3080ti territory which is in a different performance league.
Apple hypes the low voltage but they still can't make it not overheat severely.. poor design.

I was merely trying to set the expectiations right for M2 which is not that much faster than M1.. sits between M1 and M1 pro closer to the orig M1, but machines released so far with it has poor cooling overall, which will hurt performance for long running tasks (like chess).Magnum wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 5:29 pm@wickedpotus(known as Apple hater with lots of false claims)wickedpotus wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 3:56 pmSearch the forum. I have no feelings towards or against Apple.. I am just interested in the facts, and the facts are not very flattering (apart from geekbench) on M1 and M2. I will not let you bring this down to a personal insult level, and discussion on reality vs fanboyism.. Have a nice day.

Re: Apple M2
If I may go very briefly off topic: I used to be an Apple hater: I especially disliked them using the law to try to block alternative products (link).
However, I have to say that their SOC team deserve IMMENSE credit for the M1: the calculation work it could do for the tiny amount of electricity it uses was absolutely stunning. For me, it was an astonishing piece of technology.
Most importantly, it seems as though Apple have scaled back on using the law to block competition: while I won't be buying their products, I'm now free to admire their SOC team, who truly were world beaters.

Are there any owners of M2 here that can share their SF15 nps?

Re: Apple M2
That is true enough. For lots of use-cases it is great technology - low power, long battery life and great performance. But for chess where the CPU is fully loaded for very long periods of time, I don't think it is a good choice unless you choose an actively cooled configuration, AND you're happy to have a difficult life getting everything to work in A Windows world.

For the vast majority of chess enthusiastd, Apple in NOT the answer.
I like Apple in some ways but their hype fools their sheep.
Thermal throttling and other problems plague their products
