Rook odds challenge: human vs Berserk.

Post by pepechuy »

Hi.

I have just began a new challenge.
I will play with rook odds against Berserk, alternating the a1 and the h1 rook; until I win at least once with each rook.

Time control: 15 minutes initial time, plus 10 seconds increment from move 1.
Berserk is playing with default settings, within BanksiaGUI.

I have just finished the first game.
A loss for me.
I quickly got into trouble, and did not find a way out.
I wanted to resign after 28. Qd6; but I still do not find a way to resign in Banksia.
Anyway, it was interesting to see how Berserk finished me off.

Hi.

Now, the first game taking the h1 rook.
Another loss for me.

When I played 10... O-O, I was ready to sac the exchange.
That was not bad by itself, but I simply could not follow up; I did not find any plan to make some kind of progress.
As it usually happens against engines, once I begin getting into trouble there is no chance to recover.

Hi.

Now, the second game taking the a1 rook.
A win for me.

This was a difficult and interesting game.
I got into trouble (kingside attack from Berserk), but fortunately I was able to get out losing only an exchange; so I was a bishop up in the endgame.
I decided to test my technique with 43... Bd5 (sacrificing the bishop to enter a pawn up rook endgame). Ok, this was perhaps premature, I could have tried to win in simpler ways before trying this.
After move 43, I know it should be a relatively easy win (White's king is cut off from my pawn majority, the rook alone can not stop a passed pawn supported with my king). But I was not sure if I would be able to convert against an engine.
I think I made a few inaccuracies in the ending, but also that Berserk did not offer the toughest resistance.

Next game is taking the h1 rook.
When I get the chance.

Greetings.
That was a GREAT game, well played, but I believe that Berserk-9-x64-avx2-pext plays a little bit better.

Hi.

I downloaded:
berserk-9-x64.exe
berserk-9-x64-avx2.exe
berserk-9-x64-avx2-pext.exe
(among other files that came in the same zip file).

I just chose the first one.
¿What is the difference?

Greetings.

I was told that if your computer accept and play with berserk-9-x64-avx2-pext.exe, that it plays better.

Hi.

The second (and final) game taking the h1 rook.
A win for me.

This time, Berserk allowed an early queen exchange.
So, in contrast to the previous three games, this one was not difficult for me.
Still, I burned a lot of time in the clock, just to make sure the win.

Final results, all from my perspective (two rounds were needed).
a1 rook: 0, 1.
h1 rook: 0, 1.

I am considering two possible challenges next.
Option A: chess960 against weakened engines. Expected: 50 games.
Option B: pawn endings, a pawn up against strong engines (Berserk, Crafty, Komodo, Lc0, Stockfish). At least 40 games.

Greetings.

Greetings.

Hi.

¡Thanks for the suggestion! This is a great challenge.
I think I will play it after the pawn ending challenge.

I know nobody asked, but last weeks I was playing in the first stage of the Chess960 world chess championship in Lichess.
I actually qualified for the second stage, but realized it after it was over! (I wanted to kick myself).
I am aware that this is unrelated to computer chess; I am just blowing some steam off.

Or perhaps it is not completely unrelated. My chess960 rating increased more than 600 points in those first stage tournaments.
Before them, I played only against bots.
In them, I faced other humans.
While formally there is only one rating pool, in practice they are two separated rating pools: there are extremely few human vs bot chess960 games.
And I think I did get better at chess960 by facing computers.

Greetings.
