There is a clear difference between using an engine to cheat and a situation when some weaker player tell a stronger player that the stronger player can win the queen and the stronger player is surprised to hear it and ask how(maybe because he believes that the weaker player is wrong at the time of asking).

You are right that Carlsen cheated in the relevant game but intentional using of an engine is clearly worse and the punishement should not be the same.

Hi guys, I watched the video of round 3 on youtube. Niemann is a genius or a cheater.

Carlsen didn't play well, but: Niemann almost never looked at the board, he played almost blind. You can see that in the video at 2h, then at 3.15h and at the end. Haha that was awesome. Unbelievable.

Uri - Of course it’s ‘worse’ in that one is premeditated and the other is incidental…but with Magnus CHOSING to cheat when offered the opportunity. Think of it as Murder vs Manslaughter – either way you killed someone.

I think people (like me anyway) bring up Carlsen’s cheating because:


1. It is the pot calling the kettle black; and

2. Some who are willing to extrapolate and lynch Hans in all forms of chess are often want to bring out their ‘broad brushes’ and will say things like “Once a cheater, always a cheater”…but when confronted with the Magnus video are just as eager to rationalize that one away.

You simply can’t have it both ways.

To some ‘war is war’, to others it’s a ‘special military action’. May they sleep better at night.
