How do you deal with the energy/electricity costs and running your gear?

Post by smatovic »

I am currently not active in developing an engine and laptop+desktop are @~200 kWh/year @33.36 eurocent/kWh, new tariffs are @~50 eurocent/kWh here, guess if we reach some day 1 euro/kWh, or if I restart programming, I have to consider some actions in this regard.

Which energy/electricity costs??
I’m using a MacBook Pro 16-inch M1 MAX.

Hmm, 8cores@30W + GPU@60W does make some fuzz in a 24/7/year scenario, ofc, depends on your use case, maybe we will all use the Raspberry Pi v5 in future, or alike.

I hope to buy a Raspberry Pi 5 upgrade for the Mephisto Phoenix System in the next year.

I have an energy efficient system with a 5700G, cTDP configured down from 65W (88W power draw) to 45W (61W power draw). That's fine for running 16 test games in parallel. Low power draw is also good for silent cooling because heat that isn't generated in the first place doesn't have to be cooled away.

Hmm, "underclocking/undervolting" seems to be an option, more cores with less frequency - less power usage, or alike.

It's all about the efficiency sweet spot of a CPU. In today's benchmark races for marketing, both AMD and Intel configure their stock settings far away from the efficiency maximum. Means, you can reduce the power draw massively while only giving up relatively little performance. For example, the 7950X at 90W uses 62% less power than at 230W, but is only 18% slower.

It's not even underclocking or undervolting, just selecting profiles in the bios, or if it doesn't have that, using PPT (package power target) / EDC (electrical design current) / TDC (thermal design current) for which the profile is just a shorthand.

Just got 3 months bill. 223 kWh at 0,113. 1,5€ base added total 26,70€ :) .

I lower the PPT setting in my Ryzen 5900X in Ryzen Master so that for only a very small cost in performance it uses less power and produces less heat resulting in a quieter system as well.

My Intel is a 65W TDP CPU, which the motherboard unlocks to whatever higher setting I may want. Currently at 90W I think.

Anyway neither of them run chess matches or testing on a regular basis, I gave up on that.

Cos of the electricty costs? Sad days.

In another thread the re-visited STS1-15 was posted, might help to spare some test-games for developers if used appropriate.
