I find the "add foe" functionality quite useful. Does not block quotes, but gets rid of most nonsense.

I was referring to post #1162 where you quoted/responded to me saying " You demand that all the stuff against Niemann can't be taken as a proof for OTB cheating" Which...I simply never have done - indeed I am on record here earlier as saying I thought it was 60/40 he had cheated OTB at some point.

Perhaps you were not actually saying I was doing that...sure looked like it though. If you were not, I certainly apologize.
Lets end this discussion.

Chess.com Championships Underway In Canada (Toronto) & Overseas In Serbia (Belgrade).... :) 8-)

https://www.vice.com/en/article/qjknnq/ ... n-lockdown

"The security measures at the Chess.com Global Championship meant that I had to arrive at Hotel 1 in downtown Toronto before 9 a.m. to see the player's hall before it was locked down for the day. Once play began, the only people allowed in the room were the competitors, necessary crew, security personnel, and a few presenters. Everyone else watched a video feed in an adjoining room."
""It's police and military-level detecting of devices," Brancato said. "We brought them in to make sure the location is secure from any unauthorized communication devices or methods. When they're scanning players, they're doing it in a way that chess hasn't seen before; not just metal detector wands, which don't pick up a lot of things."....
"Staff were screensharing with the computers used in play to make sure that no unauthorized programs or tools were running. Because about half of the competitors were playing remotely in Belgrade, Serbia due to visa issues, they were also in a sequestered room similar to the one in Toronto overseen by Chess.com. Players in Toronto could retire to a "secure" room on the 10th floor in between matches. "

According to LegalEagle:
- $100,000,000 is a meaningless made-up number (everybody agrees on this)
- jurisdiction of federal courts in Missouri is dubious
- Carlsen's statement is probably not an assertion of fact but an opinion based on disclosed facts
- Niemann would have to prove that Carlsen did not actually think that Niemann cheated when he made his statement, a very high if not impossible bar to clear
- Nakamura's statements may similarly be opinions and commentary based on disclosed facts
- Chess.com report also unlikely to be defamatory unless Niemann can show that his communications with Rensch in which he admitted cheating are fake or were taken out of context
- Niemann's fame and notoriety might mean he is a "public figure", which would he mean he has to show actual malice (-> even more difficult for his claim to succeed). Niemann's complaint essentially makes the case that Niemann is a public figure.
- Niemann's other claims rely on alleged agreements between Carlsen and chess.com (and perhaps others) to hurt Niemann's career. Niemann offers no evidence for these allegations, but if the lawsuit reaches the discovery phase Niemann will request to see all communication between Carlsen and chess.com.

On the defamation point this is very much in line with my view.
- I do not expect Niemann to be a "public figure" for the purpose of the defamation claim. Carlsen's statements made him a public figure, but when the statements were made he was not yet a public figure (in my estimation).
- Nakamura seems to have gone a bit further than merely opinion and commentary based on disclosed facts. He has implied that several top players believe Hans regularly cheats. Personally I do not think Nakamure lied about this, so if necessary he can probably find several chess players willing to confirm that they have expressed doubts about Niemann to Nakamura.

A new and recent article.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/hes-bad-boy- ... 33858.html

One of the names is familiar so I think it is not someone entirely new to the ruckus.

More than one error in the article and appears to be the product of someone who has limited or no OTB experience from some of the descriptions used.

'Unreasonable' is a hard thing to pin down.

I mean. when a Iranian chess player refuses to participate in a tournament because an Israeli player is a participant....what happens? How does FIDE feel about such 'boycotts'. I know Firouzja simply renounced his citizenship and moved to France so he would not have to deal with that. That seems to have been his only option. To me, the whole idea of such a boycott in the first place is unreasonable.

But...Hans has no such option. If a tournament wants Magnus to play, they would never also invite Hans. Far fetched? Well, Hans is rated just under 2700 and Magnus DOES find himself playing players at that rating. It is perhaps not unreasonable for one to think Hans career trajectory will be affected by this boycott...particularly with Magnus having more time to play in more tournaments as he does not have to spend all that time/effort defending his title.

I'm just saying...'unreasonable' is a hard thing to pin down in something like this.

This is a frivolous lawsuit and a shameless attempt by Niemann, an admitted, multiple-time chess cheater, and proven chronic-liar, to try to get undeserved publicity and fortune. If there is any justice and integrity in the courts, it will be summarily dismissed against all parties.

And I'll preemptively address the elephant in the room before some knucklehead whines and cries about Niemann having not *yet* been caught red-handed cheating in OTB chess, having thus far only proven to be a rabid cheater in the online form of the game and lying about the frequency of such. Magnus Carlsen has never before withdrawn from a match or tournament in which he was actively playing and never forfeited games before Niemann was unfortunately invited to Sinquefield as a last minute replacement. So the assertion that Carlsen is: "Notorious for his inability to cope with defeat" is absolute rubbish, as is 90% of the other nonsense that comes out of Niemann's mouth. Should Magnus Carlsen have handled his very justified suspicions about whether or not Niemann was playing fair, in the manner he did? Probably not. But that is certainly up for debate. What is not up for debate is that there is ample legitimate evidence to warrant strong suspicion about the possibility that Niemann cheated in OTB chess, and this should be discussed and questions should be asked, not the least of which is his obvious arrogance and narcissism, which are personality traits consistent with someone who would do such a thing.

If there is any justification for a lawsuit it would be a class-action lawsuit against Niemann for severely hurting the perceived integrity of the chess world. Because of the stench of Niemann's debacle, there are now constant accusations being bandied about whenever someone performs well in online chess.
