I'm not a religious person myself so I like the idea that when a human life ends that some echo remains, that a person can make a lasting personal imprint in human culture. And even though chessprogramming is a very niche hobby I believe that chess engines or GUIs can make such a contribution. I don't know why Matthias felt at some point he had to delete all the code. Wouldn't it be a nice idea that his programs are still getting used and bring enjoyment to likeminded users long after his passing?

I'm a bit unhappy with how fleeting our digital artifacts are, though. My personal website is currently inaccessible even though I still pay for hosting. I already lack the time and motivation to hold the hosting company accountable and figure out what's wrong. So how could a personal website ever persist after my passing? The things I programmed as a kid are all unusable by now. Either the last copy got lost due to storage failure or because mediums or OSs got obsolete in the last few decades. Virtual things sadly seem to make poor family heirlooms.

But it's a general problem that extends well beyond software. Nothing is built to last anymore - things break and just get replaced. Relationships as well as objects and ultimately persons, too. It wouldn't have to be that way.

Hi
Sorry to hear about the passing of Matthias Gemuh. I used to enjoy playing against Taktix 2.23r, does anyone have this version to share? Yes it is on the above list but after downloading I notice it is not included. Thanks

I apologize, that was a typo on my part. The version I was referring to was 2.23t, not 2.23r. I do not have 2.23r.
