A crossover of chess and football: Short's king walk and Pelé's 'Gol de placa'.

Post by Ajedrecista »

Hello:

Now that the sad news about Pelé is very recent, I somewhat linked two sports that I like a lot: chess and football. On 5th March, 1961, Pelé scored an alien goal starting near his own penalty arc of the football pitch at Maracaná Stadium, running around 90 meters while dribbling a good bunch of opponents, finally scoring. Similar to Maradona in 1986, but from further away:

There is not any known surviving footage of the feat, disgracefully. This goal is known as 'Gol de placa' because a plaque ('placa' in Portuguese) was installed later in the stadium to pay tribute to the goal:

Attempts of 'reconstruction' of one of the most spectacular goals of the history have been made, always based on the narratives of the spectators:

And here comes the crossover between chess and football: Pelé was known as 'O Rei' ('The King' in Portuguese) and his run reminds me the very famous Short's king walk against Timman at Tilburg 1991:

It would be curious to know how The King engine evaluates this position.

Lesson: if you see a brilliant idea, Pelé already did it! ;-)

Excellent work! 8-)

Thank you very much!

I don't have a record, I'm afraid, but in one of my games I remember walking the king from one corner to the diagonally opposite one around the edge to get the win!

FIFA said that Pele scored 1281 goals in 1363 games in his career, includes friendlies and when he was in the army.

I believe this because he played 792 games and scored 732 goals, or 0.924242424 goals per game, in his senior (professional and international) career - so the higher number of 0.96 goals per game in his overall career is very credible.

My opinion: he wasn't as good as today's top players like Mbappe (the defence was a bit rubbish for some of his goals), but the gap between himself and other players was higher than the gap between Mbappe and other players is today.
Human chess is partly about tactics and strategy, but mostly about memory
