New Mittens Chessbot On Chess.com Takes Chessworld By Storm.... Hikaru.... Gotham Chess & Stockfish (Youtube) Weigh
In On How Strong the Engine/Bot Really Is...
This all looks like publicity to me... Nothing really stunning.
Any top 50 engine connected on lichess would do the same impression I guess ... (see https://github.com/ShailChoksi/lichess-bot)
I let it play against Minic and it seems of course weaker.
Not that the bot itself is weaker (because it is probably a major engine in the back-end) but because it has been configured this way in order not to use too much resources.
If I had to guess I would say around 3000Elo or so on CCRL scale, which is what on chess.com ?? 3500? 3600? I don't know in fact ...
Maybe we can find a way to do a "fair" game with an even time control to check its real strength better...

Chess.com just shelled out a bunch of $$ for PMG...expect more PR stuff to hit the fan as step 2 is logically to capitalize with anything you have and get 'eyes on it' to bring in $$$. Naka's played it...I expect Magnus to at some point.

Mittens got Crushed by Stockfish 15.1 in the Stockfish Channel. Is Mittens Komodo Dragon? I just played Mittens and lasted 53 moves.
I have read that Chess.com bots are written in JavaScript - has that changed (web assembly (WASM) would be a better choice IMO)? It seems unlikely that the Komodo Dragon team would transpile their product into JavaScript for Chess.com's benefit.

Hmmmm....you know, Larry did allude to an upcoming anouncement. Hmmm....
Would be better in my opinion from major chess streamers to comment more TCEC or CCC games (not only the classic clickbaits "SF destroyed by Leela stuff", "SF is unbeatable", ...).
The analysis by Matthew Sadler of many engines games (https://www.youtube.com/@SiliconRoadChess) are absolutly lovely and interesting, with at the end really not many viewers while the work needed to run all the various tests (engine versus engine) Matthew does is huge and the quality of the final video is amazing to me.

Honestly I find this a little sad.
Becoming a top chess player and making videos which get high viewing numbers are different skill sets: GothamChess has 2.24 million subscribers (link). He's clearly a strong chess player, but also offers:
* hypes up relatively meaningless games to make them seem as though the world depends on the outcome
* continues to find new ways to amplify emotion to the skies in his commentary on games
Which is the best approach? Simple! 2.24 million subscribers vs less than three thousand subscribers.
Thoughtful GM checkmated.
