Hello everyone,
We are currently testing our new chess database software and we would greatly appreciate any help from the community in doing so. In particular, we would like to get some feedback on our new engine window, which allows users to easily add new engines to the software. This new feature will be included in our imminent 5.0 release, so we want to make sure it is fully tested and ready for the public.
As a team of chess enthusiasts, we know that many of you have a wealth of experience with chess engines and may already have multiple engines at your disposal. If you are interested in helping us test the new engine window and provide some feedback, we would be extremely grateful.
Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated as we work to improve and refine our software in advance of the 5.0 release. Thank you in advance for your help!

Re: scid 5.0: help request
I asked chatGPT to write that
Adding an engine is now super easy:
- click on the evaluation bar
- click on new engine
- select an engine executable
and the engine should start analyzing the current position.
Some of you already have a lot of engines installed.
I would really appreciate if you could help with the engine testing.
Reporting which engines you tried and if someone didn't work.
I have uploaded scid5.0_beta packages here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/scid/f ... %20Latest/
and as usual no installation is necessary.
Just decompress and launch scid/scid

Re: scid 5.0: help request
I downloaded and briefly looked at it (didn't test the engine installation in it), and it looks very slick and quick. Also, I could open a database I had created with pgnscid that came with scid vs pc. I would like to have both scid vs pc and scid installed for comparison. Will this be possible with the new release? Some months ago I had tried it, and my main difficulty was that both scid vs pc and scid executables are called scid; also other programs like pgnscid that come with them appear to be the same in both. So I could not figure out how to install them side by side. Is it enough to change the name of one of the executables?

It's ok to change the executable's name. However it may also be necessary to change the executable's name in the sripts.chesskobra wrote: ↑Sat Jan 07, 2023 1:03 am and my main difficulty was that both scid vs pc and scid executables are called scid; also other programs like pgnscid that come with them appear to be the same in both. Let me point how that it is possible to import multiple PGN files directly from the GUI.
After selecting Database->Import File(s) of PGN Games it is possible to select multiple files in the dialog that opens.

It is mind blowing.
Describe scid in Shakespearean style:
"Lo! A chess database software doth appear,
Scid, by name, with which thou canst record
The games of chess thou hast played through the years.
Import thou canst from PGN files the hoard
Of games, or add them manually with ease,
Annotate thou canst each move, search, and explore
The history of players and their feats,
Generate thou canst statistics, graphs, and more.
Scid is a tool that all chess players should seize
To aid them in their quest for victory."

Good to have the new Scid 5.0!
Unfortunately, the macOS Version of 5.0 beta does not work with macOS big Sur.
It Shows me, that I need macOS 12 or later...can you Compile also a version for big sur users?
Thanks!

Well as Far as Scid Engine Testing is concerned.....probably I've pushed it to the maximum limits...But I had to stop using it for serious engine testing.(various scid versions)..for one thing it doesn't do more than 20 engines or so (They no longer fit in the engine window) ...It doesn't allow various opening books for separate engines...and it can only do RR tournaments & maybe Gauntlet tournaments..I don't think it has boxes for the New NNUE engines or for LC0 (Net settings) So you would be "flying blind" so to speak and once the tourney starts you can't easily change windows to monitor what's going on or do standings because that engine setup window (box) was always up....If a engine crashes I believe you lose all the prior data...So There are multiple issues... You might be able to use it for very very short 1/2 day tournaments or something...I don't remember if there was a "ratings box" for the engines...I actually never completed even "ONE" tournament in Scid so far....Fulvio wrote: ↑Fri Jan 06, 2023 9:17 am Hello everyone,

Please note that the management of tournaments between engines has never been a feature of scid.supersharp77 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 09, 2023 12:01 am I don't remember if there was a "ratings box" for the engines...I actually never completed even "ONE" tournament in Scid so far....![]()

It's possible that you may be thinking of scidvspc, which is a fork of the original project that was created a while ago.
However, scidvspc is now a separate project that doesn't have any connection to the main scid project.
