New machine

Post by Carbec »

Hello,

I am considering a new machine. Mine becomes to be old (2011). I would like to have some suggestions
processor ? memory ? This machine will serve for programming my litthe engine, play chess, do tournaments
with my engine against other ones. I would like to have a silent machine (if possible).

Thanks for informations

I think around 2000/2500 euros. I live in France, prices may differ with other countries.

I quickly made a config where I buy my computers.
It's in Belgium, I think it's a bit cheaper in France.

AMD 7950X : 689€
Motherboard around : 400€
32 GB DDR5 : 150 €
M2 NVME 1 GB : 165 €
Cheap Graphic card : 94 €

Other parts are a bit random to get an idea of the price ...

Total around 2033€

I have bought several used workstation computers off eBay. For example here is a 20 core dual Xeon: https://www.ebay.com/itm/394301873654

I watched some youtube videos and apparently especially for non-gaming workloads the 7950X is equal or sometimes even better than the X3D version. The X3D version seems to be more energy efficient, but also of course significantly more expensive.

I looked at the AMD 7950X, it has 170W of TDP. Its very hot, and certainly need a big cooling, and generate a lot of noise.
Is there a less hot model?

Thanks

You can set up the AMD 7950X in ECO mode, only 65 watts, but still very fast.
