You have all the credit for getting us to where we are. This forum minus a single digit of unpopular people(you can include me) would be a much better place but you simply refused to do it, and everyone knows why moderator elections are indefinitely put on hold. So why am I fixing your mess now? I can vote by mail if it gets down to that while I'm not even running for anything.

Well, organize elections then, and vote by mail. Like I said, don't expect anything from me.

It's always been a "if only we could get rid of X". Problem is, apart from sometimes being bullying, there's always another X. Almost as if the community elects somebody to be an unpopular nuisance. Maybe, rather than a volunteer, there should actually be nuisance elections, elect someone to be the rotating indestructable pest for a month.noobpwnftw wrote: ↑Fri May 19, 2023 5:31 pm You have all the credit for getting us to where we are. Multiple forums are the answer, people will migrate to whatever suits them best.

To end a quarrel, you don't censor one voice and pretend nothing will happen, you keep getting rid of the Xs until there is no quarrel, very simple. But that's minor issue, even you can more or less see the real problem: the indestructible pest isn't rotating.

Deep down some people think the community can't govern itself, and we are one election away from complete chaos. Such ego is also putting the forum at stake that "it'd either be me or you won't have a forum". That's the problem.

But you cannot govern yourself. It is already a few years ago that I withdrew from involving myself in talkchess matters, and all that time you have not achieved anything. Matters only got worse.

Re: Time to immigrate to another forum?
These discussions just go on forever and nothing happens. I think that is because no concrete and viable alternative is proposed.
If the people who want a change would set out:
- the new server where it will be hosted
- how the ongoing costs will be met
- will there be annoying adverts
- which forum software
- how will moderators be elected
- what will the moderation policies be
- what is the ownership ?
i.e. actually present an alternative rather than just talking about an alternative and no-one knowing exactly what that alternative is. If you don't know the alternative, you are likely to want to stick with what you have,

In my opinion you are the most important person for computer chess during the past decade. Not just in creation of the 7 man files (thanks also to Ronald, another star) but also for the publication of the data and algorithms. Your contributions to TCEC do not go unnoticed.noobpwnftw wrote: ↑Fri May 19, 2023 5:31 pm You have all the credit for getting us to where we are. I think you can call me a noob fan.
If you left, that would be a terrible blow for computer chess and would literally bring a tear to my eye.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

I now voted "yes", after seeing a deterioration recently. The page loses design and reverts to basic text under all three browsers I use and the verification check appears after accessing any page, not just upon entering the forum.
Alternatives? I know of Ed's, but others have disappeared over time (as MZ or Rybka) and some are even more specific (like my own). Not much to choose from, really.
