The domain itself doesn't have any value. It's the archived discussion of many years that's worth anything. Even that can be scraped and archived if needed. Esp if the current owners starts being difficult.
[...]
There are deep links in the web to talkchess.com you will loose all those, and, as already mentioned, "Verify you are a human", even if it is legally OK to scrape current TC, I am not able to perform this action, give me a database with forum id, thread id, post id, and user id, and I might be able to import into demo forum, or alike.

Most likely a waste of time. HGM tried that a while back only to have it torpedoed by Rebel telling the forum owner. You can look at the discussions in the forum for more info. I think everyone who followed Rebel’s behavior is both confused and pretty tired of it.
Fat Titz by Stockfish, the engine with the bodaciously big net. Remember: size matters. If you want to learn more about this engine just google for "Fat Titz".

It was a misunderstanging, caused by technical difficulties with Ed's e-mail. I don't remember exact details but you can ask Ed and HGM. Ed explained and apologized, publicly. You can look at the discussions in the forum for more info.

We need the permission from the owner of course or everything is dead in the water.
Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

Jurisdicaton:
To run a forum with ~3600 registered members involves several EU laws applying,
depending on jurisdication you have to take care of things like:

- Trademark
- Copyright
- Imprint
- Cookies
- Data Protection
- Right to be forgotten/deleted
- Hate-speech (CTF)

With increasing user numbers/daily visits the forum will be considered as a
tele-service-provider and additional laws start to apply.

I could figure out some laws which would apply in EU or Germany for running a
online community with less than 10K users, but it would be nice if there is a
person which takes this kind of job as permanent duty, not me.

Generally, I think this all is handable by a small, motivated team.
Then don't host it in the EU, choose another country without all the ludicrous red-tape.

EU regulations, in particular GDPR, claim worldwide jurisdiction. If you are processing personal data of EU residents, you are still subject to the law, even if your server is not in the EU. You should know about/think about this, but it shouldn't stop you from operating a website.

Jurisdiction of society to run server and hosting of server should be in concord., dunno how to set up such things on Bahamas, Djibouti etc., take a look at US, China...laws concerning online platforms are coming worldwide, the 90s anarcho days of web are over....

as mentioned, I think this doable by a small motivated team, but you need to get into this stuff, be conform, set it up, once up and running there won't be so much hassle.

Sorry for hijacking your call for crowdfunding, but it seems people would like to clarify some things before they are willing to donate money for domain+DB takeover....

I myself share the opinion that all content on current TC falls under public domain, but I will respect the shop's point of view on this, if shop says scraping is a no go I am out.
