Replacement for RTHomeserver

Post by cma6 »

For over a decade, I've used RTHomeserver on local slave systems to facilitate remote engines like Komodo (or Dragon) and SF which have been setup in Aquarium on the local master system. However, recently I've found that on my 5-system Windows LAN (1 master and 4 slaves), it is impossible to run remote engines in Aquarium using RTHomeserver on the slave systems.
Can someone recommend a replacement for RTHomeserver, which is old DOS software if memory serves.

Thanks in advance to the experts

It's not completely clear to me what your requirement is, but I'll take a guess: will this help - link?
Human chess is partly about tactics and strategy, but mostly about memory

Towforce:
Thanks for the link. I reviewed several of the products, especially Connectwise since I had seen it mentioned on Talkchess. I will look into Connectwise.

RTMHomeserver does the following once installed on the slave systems in a separate folder for each core on each slave system. In one folder, say "slave1_SFcore1", after installation of RTMHomesever, there is also by default a file called "RTMHomeserver.ini". Edit it to point to "Stockfish...exe" in the same folder, for example, and to Port=7017.

Then in your GUI (Chessbase or Fritz or Aquarium), create a remote engine that points (by computer name or IP address) to the system "slave1" and uses port 7017. Now you can run your remote engine(s) from master system over your LAN.
If you have a total of 62 free physical cores on 4 slave systems, you can run 62 remote engines simultaneously.
RTHOMEserver worked with glitches for the last 10+ years but has stopped working, even though the Windows LAN is working fine. So I'm looking for a replacement for RTHomeserver.
The programs on your linked page seem to do other things, like streaming but not what RTHomeserver does, unless someone has experience with such a program.
Thanks again.

SSH with InBetween is a good replacement for RTHomeserver. You may need some googling to help with the setup. Send me a private message if you feel you need some help.

Thanks most kindly for the idea. I will begin my research on SSH with InBetween and let you know when I get stuck.

I always preferred netChess, only available trough the wayback machine for some time now. Can't recall using it on Aquarium, but there shouldn't be a problem.

Ozymandias,
I could start NetchessEngine_server.exe on slave system. This seemed to run my engine "Stockfish". However, NetchessEngine_client.exe would not run on Master system. Although Aquarium started remote engine with correct Port#, the analysis never ran over my LANt. Nevertheless, your idea was greatly appreciated.

Did you try to run the remote engine from the command prompt first?

Has always worked for me too but have not used it for a few years now. Did you determine the cause for it to get broken? Maybe going from Windows 10 to Windows 11, or maybe even some Windows update?

As far as I know the ChessOk software hasn't really changed for many years now.

Ron, thanks for the ideas, which I will explore. As of 7/15/23 remote engines were working fine from my master system. I shut that system down for a month while I got new RAM. System now works and is seen on my 5-system LAN, but IdEA remote engines no longer run from the master system. I even tried running Aquarium from another system as master but same problem.
Since I did a Windows monthly update right after restarting master system and also installed Nvidia GeForce Experience, perhaps that's the issue. Aquarium has not changed since 2020 version as far as I know.
