Another one cyclic zugzwang position is nr.126

n7/b1p1K3/1pP4p/1P4p1/6p1/1p4Pn/1P2N1br/3NRn1k w - - 0 1

No original source is given and even if the position was discussed here already several times I couldn't find any author so far neither. Position is in Chest database too, DTM126 will be reached with best move 1.Kf6 only, but e.g. 1.Kf8 (?!) will delay mate for 2 moves only again, eg. with 1...Bb8 2.Ke7 Ba7 having reached original starting position again.
Don't want to be misunderstood, as for mate in x problem that's not a dual, yet for a test position for engines in automatically evaluated suite it's not so good as for my pov, regards
Peter.

That one is undoubtedly based on this cooked problem of 1891:

The original source can be found at Google Books (problem No. 135):

Thanks a lot, Jesus, will add the infos to my own databases, but in the meantime I made a new .epd 10 positions smaller out of Dann's suite, removing all the above shown doubtful ones, among those the two of them you found the sources of, so here these aren't included anymore anyhow:

Seems that with this one smaller suite 15"/pos."are rather ok than that was the case as for the bigger one, at least SMP with good hardware and the best engines as for solving such problems. Of course the positions are still very special, favoring engines with refined code for mate- problems but that's an interesting ability of it's own to me too anyhow, and even if it's none of Lc0's best strenghts, it scores not so bad here, regards
Peter.

So you have remove Nr. 4, 27, 29, 63, 67, 109, 122, 126, 130, 135
but you mentioned above first Nr. 63, 67 etc.

But what is wrong with Nr. 4, 27, 29 ?

And Nr. 30 is in ?

I removed all those, of which best move isn't well enough to be discriminated to second best one. E.g. nr.4 (you ask for in extra posting) is 9moves of a Blathy- study cut off.

9.(1.) Rxb7+ is a clear best move with shortest DTM, but to let the position be run in a suite automatically adjudicated, it's too hard for any engine (even Huntsman) to find correct DTM in reasonable TC (for a 138 position- suite, so at maybe seconds to few minutes/pos.) and if that's not te be expected to be found and evaluated really correctly, every success of "solving" was anyhow more or less pure accident, you see?

Huntsman is able to keep mate- score in output backwarding way to position after 9th move Rxb7+ Kf8:

DTM is too long, but at least mate is within horizon.
Taking back only two plies more makes output look like this in depth 35 of MultiPV=4:

And the point it this one: e.g. 9.Rc7 (?!) doesn't cost the clear win, after 9...Kf8 10.Rf7+ position with transposition to the one before 9th move (the nr.4-one in suite) is reached agaain and the detour delays mate for just two moves all in all, that isn't enough discrimination between best and second best with such a long way to mate to go still, if not as for exact DTM itself. It's not a dual for a mate in x- problem (study-wise), but for a STC- test position for engines I'd call it a dual yet.

If the engine "sees" the advantage and yet choses not the very best but second best move, that doesn't have best DTM but yet doesn't give away the win, that would be a better performance in STC but to find Rxb7+ with 0.00- eval accidentally.
Guess you know, what I mean. Shorter: the position is simply too hard for a suite of short to moderate TC, for that aim many more moves had to be cut off the way to mate as it's done with several other positions of the suite as well.

Nr.30 isn't really solvable as for DTM in STC neither, but at least the move is to be discriminated to second best one with engine getting the "plan" of it;

that was got after starting with empty hash (32G, 30 threads of 16core Ryzen).
And it's the one of the three positions made out of the Miljanic- study with the least number of moves cut off of the original study and without second best move about as good as best one (alternatives are game changing). See the according posting about those three positions above,

Peter.

Re: New test set 'pure'

Thanks to all for these efforts. Believe it or not , I did analyze all of these with multi-pv at long time control with several engines.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.
