I am looking to get a new PC - AMD 7950X.
I use Chessbase 17 daily...searches of the 10 million game Megabase...and plan on running multiple engines on positions/games while doing normal internet surfing.
I had 16 GB on a i7-6700 for a couple of years and...frankly, I never seemed to have enough RAM.
32 GB might be fine...but could spring for 64 GB (possibly GSKILL Ripjaws and was just wondering if that would be overkill. Thoughts?
64GB Ram - Overkill?

Re: 64GB Ram - Overkill?
For testing and running matches you probably don't need more than 512M per core and could get by with less, unless you are running very long time control matches. 16 cores x 512M = 8G. So even if you are doing that in parallel with other tasks, I think 32g would be enough. If you have higher core counts, you should have proportionately more RAM. All my new machines have 64G but they are big servers (24 cores and up).

Nice joke.
Even my MacBook Pro 16-inch M1 MAX has 64 GB RAM.
I'm waiting for the M3 MAX to use 128 GB RAM.

Consider that Lc0 stores the game tree in memory via MCTS search.

I bought a PC with 64GB of RAM in 2012. It is now 2023.CornfedForever wrote: ↑Mon Apr 03, 2023 3:44 am I am looking to get a new PC - AMD 7950X.

If you sometimes need more than 16GB on your current PC, I would just go for 64GB unless cost is an issue. Even if SSDs are pretty fast, it is good to avoid having to use the swap file.

Re: 64GB Ram - Overkill?
Is there any strength improvement going from ddr5 32gb to 64gb in LTC for Stockfish?
What about for Leela?
If so then what approximate ELO gain?
Assume everything is using i9-14900k with a rtx 4090 card and ddr5 ram at 6000Mhz.

I can't actually answer this; but can say that I just got a 7945HX laptop with 64gb, fast SSD and am so glad I did. Chessbase 17 with engines running most of the threads and searching Megabase...it's really like hot knife thru butter!

Re: 64GB Ram - Overkill?
Yes there is.
Why only 32 or 64 GB? Apple MacBook has already 128 GB RAM.
Stockfish and Leela runs great on MacBooks.
At 55 vs 55 watt, multicore, a MacBook M3 MAX is faster than i9-13980HX
At 55 vs 80 watt, multicore, a MacBook M3 MAX is still slightly faster than i9-13980HX
If Apple will cut off their low power limit and change it to 110 watt, it will be around 55% faster than the i9-13980HX at 170 watt.
