Stockfish managed a 72 move draw as white.

While 8.- ..., Bb7 would have been a more balanced game. I only found one game with 8.- ..., c5, which was played in 2017 and ended 1—0:

https://old.chesstempo.com/gamedb/game/4121060

------------

The last 'blunder' by SF is 14.- ..., bxc3, allowing a checkmate in twelve moves starting with 15.- Qh6+, which my local copy of SF running on modest hardware and Multi-PV = 7 did not see until it was too late. My local copy of SF did not see the risk when thinking on 16.- ..., cxb2 and gave drawish evals, then realized about 17.- Nxh7 after 16.- ..., cxb2 was played.

Comparing with the game 201 with colours reversed, the first deviation was at white's 12th move, when SF played 12.- h5 and Torch played 12.- Bxg7. My local copy of SF at Multi-PV = 2 logically prefers 12.- h5:

However, the Chess Cloud Database Query Interface thinks the opposite and prefers Torch's choice 12.- Bxg7 by a lot:

Code: Select all

Move Rank Score Notes
♗Bxg7 2 115 ! (06-00)
♙h5 0 42 ? (05-01)
♕Qf4 0 -16 ? (01-01)
[...]
If you keep following the moves suggested by the Chess Cloud Database Query Interface, you will see that Torch played top moves according to the database. A big problem in SF is black's 15th move, where both Kg8 and Kh8 are losing (Kg8 loses faster), but SF thinks for a long time that Kg8 draws:

The blindness strikes again because SF proposes 16.- g7 instead of the winning 16.- Ng5, which eventually lead to 17.- Nxh7 commented above. SF eventually found the correct line at depth 38 in my run.

------------

An interesting exercise is disabling NNUE, which usually solves the issue. That was not exactly the case because SF still thought for a long time that 15.- ..., Kg8 draws:

The comparison of time and depth in the same position and under the same search conditions reveals that 15.- ..., Kg8 was found as losing earlier without NNUE:

Thorough analysis. But weird that the strongest chss engineengulf the bait and keep taking the knight then finally promoting to a second queen

Why was game stopped after move 24? So no mate played! Really weird, that SF and 250 threads don't see that 14.-bxc3 is mate even in 1m+1s game. 6 cores SF changes to 14. -h5 after 5-15 sec. May be instamove?

The latest Stockfish (no double NNUE but the search tuning of that patch has stayed in) still has a blind spot, after 11...b5 (there is already nothing better here and we are at minus 1.30 for Black, or more) already, so without the poor following Stockfish moves, Stockfish does only choose 12.Bxg7 at a depth 37 and further.

To compare, this is output from Crystal 6, it goes much earlier to 13...gxh5 instead of 13...b4, long before depth 34 shown here and stays with the capture (12.Bxg7 and 13...gxh5). But it needs more time to complete the corresponding depths compared to Stock:

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.
