Dear folks,
recently I have again developed some interest in computerchess. My current hardware setup is a bit hopeless and outdated though.
It is Christmas time, I can ask for a present.
There are a few things I know:
1. I will only buy a notebook, I don’t want useless stuff like monitors again.
2. 500€ is an upper bound money-wise for me.
3. My system will run a lot, so I want it to be reasonably quiet and above all stable and reliable.
4. I don’t care too much about lc0, so no expensive graphic cards for me (also I don’t really trust cooling in notebooks anyway).
By huge coincidence I came across a post in a dead german computerchess board, that suggested the following:
https://www.csl-computer.com/notebook-c ... orial_nk11
This one looks very reasonable to me, but then it’s been ages since I had any clue about these things myself.
I would appreciate advice by you. Thanks in advance!
Kind regards
Peter

CPU = Intel® N200 4 cores. Not the fastest, but typical TDP: 6 W
. For 500€ you can get 2-3 x more speed.

Re: Looking for advice on hardware upgrade/notebook
TDP stands for Thermal Design Power, in watts, and refers to the power consumption under the maximum theoretical load. Power consumption is less than TDP under lower loads. The TDP is the maximum power that one should be designing the system for.Peter Berger wrote: ↑Thu Dec 21, 2023 8:43 pmI don't understand: "typical TDP: 6 W", please explain.
What would be your suggestion, Jouni?
We can also look at TDP as an indicator of how much heat the CPU or GPU is designed to handle. If the TDP is higher, the CPU or GPU can dissipate more heat; thus, it's better. The TDP is also used to measure how much air a device's cooling system needs to cool down that device.

Thanks to both of you - it is true, that I want to be on the safe side stability-wise ( power consumption I don't care about too much). 2-3 times slower looks like a reaasonable number.

Re: Looking for advice on hardware upgrade/notebook
As budget notebook I recommend the HP 255 G9:
https://geizhals.de/hp-255-g9-v106703.html
Available with AMD Ryzen 3 with 4 cores over AMD Ryzen 5 with 6 cores to AMD Ryzen 7 with 8 cores, all Zen 3 arch based.
Starting from ~350,- euro w/o OS.
Take a look into the manual, it is upgradeable and repairable:

But I do not recommend to run pro computer chess on budget machines in general.

Re: Looking for advice on hardware upgrade/notebook
Regarding TDP and fan noise, up to 15W there are devices without fan cooling, silent but less beefy, >=15W you will see devices with fan cooling, performance notebook CPUs are in the range of 35W to 55W, some with dual fan cooling.

They are not very quiet but stable and reliable. I have two of them running. I installed Linux on them.
