I think I'll try downloading it at the library, they have some commercial antivirus. But I've learned to respect that Defender, it's not as rubbish as some people think. Once it's downloaded somewhere, it can be checked online and with something else.

The problem with Windows Defender is that it quarantines programs unexpectedly (often after a Windows update). E.g. on my PC it removed Arasan 24.1 from its folder which I noticed only after dozens of games ended with time forfeits. Then you have to restore it manually.

Yes, that is aways the approach, but with the bmi2 exe Defender kicks in after it is downloaded, detects a Trojan and deleted it. At least that is what happens here.

Indeed, in lots of reviews today it ranks very highly. It has dramatically improved over the years. Probably better than any other free alternatives.

I haven't kept track of which engines my original Windows 10 virus scanner supposedly found a virus on, either when downloading or starting the engine, since I usually compile the engines for my PC myself and don't use the finished "engine".exe.Graham Banks wrote: ↑Sat Feb 03, 2024 9:58 amYou can always go into your security settings and allow the download to be accepted. That's what I do when it's obviously a false positive.chessica wrote: ↑Sat Feb 03, 2024 9:48 amSorry,pohl4711 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 03, 2024 5:31 amAll I can say is, that my GDATA Antivirus (commercial software from Germany) does not have a problem with Alexandria 6.0 avx2. I use GDATA since many years and had never any virus-problems on my machines. I would never trust any Microsoft/Windows-crap.Rubinus wrote: ↑Sat Feb 03, 2024 1:25 amavx2 version does not like Windows Defender. bmi2 also.pohl4711 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 6:21 am Alexandria 6.0 released:

it doesn't matter if YOU don't have a problem with a virus warning, that doesn't help anyone.
What is interesting, however, is that someone has a problem with a virus warning.

Re: New engine releases & news H1 2024
Winter v3.0 is released. Thank you to Connor for making the Windows binaries.
I will probably make a more in depth post later in the Winter thread, until then, here is a link to the release page:
https://github.com/rosenthj/Winter/releases/tag/v3.0
Self play improvement:
Elo | 119.24 +- 7.98 (95%)
Conf | 40.0+0.40s Threads=1 Hash=64MB
Games | N: 4002 W: 1742 L: 420 D: 1840
Penta | [24, 166, 637, 812, 362]
http://chess.grantnet.us/test/35205/
I would take this to be an upper bound. NP/s will be noticeably slower than v2.0, due to a novel network architecture. On some hardware the speed penalty is greater than on other, and I am not yet sure the exact reason. There is also reason to believe the Windows compiles might suffer a bit more from the slowdown.

Re: New engine releases & news H1 2024
Hm, Winter is available every year in wintertime ... I think I understand.
Nice to see a new winter release is available. I saw it this morning and have been checking the github site for compiles all day. Good to see the Seer programmer helping out.
What I want to say is ...
THANK YOU Jonathan
and of course ... THANK YOU Conner
There is a small 4+2 list running at the moment.
I do not know why I do such things.
I must be completely crazy ... Balla.
Winter 3.0 NN is available ...
The weekend is great, this weekend is definitiv great.
That is a fact.
https://www.amateurschach.de/fling/index.html (Winter 2.0 is also playing in a 66+6 tournament ... much more Balla as I wrote before).
https://www.amateurschach.de/fling/test-38.html (new releases on start, you can follow Winter 3.0 results).
Best
Frank

Re: New engine releases & news H1 2024
Hi Jonathan,
I stopped the test after around 300 games ...
Not sure, but it seems the version is not stronger as 3200 Elo (my own rules).
I am using on Intel i9-10900k the
Winter_3.0_New.exe
Maybe I am wrong, but this compile is the fastest (I test the compiles before I start).

Re: New engine releases & news H1 2024
Hi Frank,
Based on the engines Winter faced and their ratings this is very possible without there being an issue with the release. Eg Clarity is rated 200 points above Winter v2.0 on CCRL 40/2 list while being just over 3200 on your list.
There are a lot of unknowns for this release and I will wait for more results to come in before I start panicking
All that being said, I hope the release is at least playing interesting games. I think it made positional material sacrifices in all 6 of its games at TCEC so far. I hope that trend continues in its upcoming games, though it is for sure again outmatched against Caissa.
