Has anyone got any bright ideas about how to get Chessmaster 5000 working on a modern PC?
I have Intel and AMD CPUs to choose from, but they are all within the last 5 years. The OS is Windows 11 and compatabilty mode doesn't cut it. I have the CM 5000 CD.
IIRC it was written for Windows 95 but works on Windows 98.
There are no pre-built DOS-Box tries possible because this is a Windows program. My experience of creating a Win 98 Virtual Machine didn't end happily last time, but is this the only way?
Many thanks.

Yes, I know !
Use it via Dos-Box +Win 95. Abandonware-France has this "mixture". Works perfectly in my i5+Win 10 Home.
The download link:
https://www.abandonware-france.org/ltf_ ... &fic=liens
NR: download version automatique (installer for DosBox+Win95+CM5000).

Re: ChessMaster 5000
Is there any specific reason why you are trying to get it to run? There's nothing in CM5K that isn't also in the later versions (other than an older/weaker engine), all the way up to CM9K at least. And CM9K runs on Windows 10 and 11.Werewolf wrote: ↑Sun Mar 17, 2024 8:38 pm Has anyone got any bright ideas about how to get Chessmaster 5000 working on a modern PC?

Re: ChessMaster 5000
Nostalgia of seeing the CM5000 beating a very annoying man in my chess club in 1997 is part of the reason, if I'm being honest! But you have raised a point I was unaware of - CM9000 runs on Windows 11 64bit? Would you happen to recommend a download site please?JVMerlino wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2024 5:31 pmIs there any specific reason why you are trying to get it to run? This site should work.

Downloading both folders, mounting drives, installing, unmounting, patching files, applying a fix, and then finding a workaround for not having a physical CD - that was at the limit of my ability. But after an hour or so I got it working! Thank you so much, total blast from the past!JVMerlino wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2024 7:01 pmWerewolf wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2024 6:54 pm Nostalgia of seeing the CM5000 beating a very annoying man in my chess club in 1997 is part of the reason, if I'm being honest! Incidentally CM9000 running natively hits 2 million nps, CM5000 above in Windows 95 in Dropbox hits 30,000nps: a massive 60x speedup!

The King was always a relatively slow engine, but I suspect that DosBox and other stuff is getting in the way of some performance for CM5K. I think the engine, running by itself in today's hardware, should be able to reach at least 500K NPS.
Sadly, I only have CM9, and on my hardware it gets about 1.3M NPS.
