2024 Moderation Election ***Update***

Seems pretty clear that our glorious leaders have no intent on running any fair elections. First they hold out and delay the process as long as possible; Then they start throwing around false bans against those who they disagree with; And now we have some disgusting attempt at credentialism. Next we'll just get to select between Kang and Kodos.

The founders rescued the forum.
I am sure they will make elections possible. They are honorable experienced people.
The whole idea of Talkchess was to moderate. Otherwise we could have had continued unmoderated with rec.games.computer.chess.
But discussions there were not possible anymore at that time. The founders made talkchess possible. Many many hours were invested to give the computerchess community a place to live.
And it was a well known forum with all kind of famous programmers who came here.
Over many years.


I don’t want that people destroy elections with faked accounts or 2 or more votes.
Democracy is a very high value. Especially in our days where elections are manipulated via „social“ media and faked news.

but my guess it's much ado about nothing (*). First there need to be a new candidate (to replace hgm) or more candidates, we'll see. In the informal history of computer chess it obviously would help in the democratic process for the votes if such person would be
known in this subculture. In other words, it looks like current mods taking
precautions but this imo may not even be necessary (and hopefully this soap then
will be ended soon, for the medium term, ie a few years at least).

PS Tforce do you really think that some anonymous piranha's (discord or
otherwise) who tried to poison this forum with some vitriol would get any chance
to get a majority vote to become moderator (njet); oh and you're not so anonymous anymore because you told a few more things about yourself (lol)

NB some people were banned indeed, simply in agreement of the charter;
(insults, personal attacks etc) actually on discord there also exist general
moderation guidelines (**). whereby apparently some young nerd engine
programmers lack some understanding in other fields as eg. civilized human
interaction and communication; there's a fine line between freedom of (thought)
and speech and obvious social norms as eg. not to insult others; maybe gone
next year in Trump country but i live in Europe, and the internet isn't
ruled by the Usa thkG (and Vinton Cerf, Bill C, and many others )

Fair enough.
But we are talking about something else here. We are talking about a rather little job, that is supposed to become your spare time hobby for a limitted time.
There is a clear set of rules for what is deemed to be acceptable to post. As a moderator you are supposed to judge what breaks the (pretty simple) rules and act accordingly, preferrably in a way that creates more peace and and a more enjoyable place for everone (this would show some talent).
And if you get the votes, you should feel confident about your ability to perform.
I kind of agree with Andrew Grant, that it is questionable if the FG wants democratically elected moderators in the first place. And who would potentially want to deal with the guys on a potentially daily basis, given their rather unfriendly stance on candidates (like asking for all kind of nonsense qualifications or giving a general feeling of you being unwanted?)
None of this is really necessary in my opinion though. You just need a bunch of kind of reasonable and well-meaning people ready to do their best. Democracy works amazingly well to choose these kind of people from a bunch of more or less random candidates to my experience.
So: I'd love to see some people deciding to go for it. And I'd love to see the FG be a little more encouraging.

Well, you claim to have met me, but I’ve never met you and have no idea who you might be, nor do I care. Being a fan of a music band and bought a concert ticket does not mean the band knows you, even if you waved at the drummer from the crowd.

Regarding your analogy: Whitney Houston was on stage, I was 7 rows back. She said, "You name it, I've done it - including 3 in a bed." I laughed. She looked me right in the eye and said, "You can laugh - but I've done it!" However, I have never actually met Whitney Houston, and I don't claim to have. Meeting her would obviously have been a better experience than meeting you (even though you were actually friendly in person - in contrast to your online persona). In the name dropping game, me having spoken to John Major while he was Prime Minister would be a better move. I have also met Ed (I was operating Crafty in the 2000 WCCC in London, and Crafty played against Rebel). I haven't met HGM in person, so I cannot claim the full set of the founders group.

Oh hi! While you’re here (and we’re getting increasingly off topic of course) can you explain this quote of yours:

They (the context) being the talkchess moderators. Me for sure, and almost certainly the other two, have no opinion (like or dislike, respect or lack of) one way or the other about you. Certainly should not have given you the impression of like/dislike, cause pretty sure never said/done anything. So what’s it all about? Not playing to the peer group for inclusion, I hope?!

Anyway, for the record, I suspend judgement, I mean what would be the point?
