Problem with Rodent IV

Post by Kohflote »

Hi all,
A few hours ago I installed Rodent IV on my laptop (i5, windows 10). I am using Arena 3.5.1, set to 2 cores.

I frequently encountered "restarting lagging threads" when Rodent IV is thinking, before making a move. Would appreciate your help on addressing this issue, please. Thank you.

Best regards,

I had trouble with all Rodent versions on my AMD.
I believe that Jim did compiles of a few. Might be worth a try.

Dear Graham,

I can't find Rodent IV compilation by Jim. I will request him to help to compile.

Thank you for your kind reply and suggestion.

Best wishes,

Dear Graham,

I'm looking for a stable Rodent IV as I would like to experiment with the parameters to set up different personalities.

Once again, thank you.

I have a 22nd April 2020 exe with size 550kb that you could try. It identifies itself as:

id name Rodent IV V0.26 64-bit/MSVS2017/POPCNT/SMP

It is Rodent IV with chess960 capability added, but of course it still plays standard chess.

If the 960 one from Ray does not work on i5, maybe Pawel can take a look at it? There is of course also Pawel's new engine Publius, see the programmers section of the forum (or Pro Deo forum).

Also there was a newer Rodent IV version I think made after the 2020 versions, and this one still has the playing style options says Pawel. AND it has NNUE :!:

See https://prodeo.actieforum.com/t647-rodent-nnue

Quoting from that thread:
This is an unofficial release of Rodent IV with NNUE capabilities. NNUE code has been lifted from Toga NNUE. It uses old (smaller) Stockfish networks and mixes their score with handcrafted Rodent eval. Implementation is not optimal, because NNUE score is calculated from scratch, but still gains about 320 Elo points over handcrafted eval, assuming that default parameters are used.

Now for the best thing. Since it uses NNUE and classic eval simultaneously, and good old personality system is still in place, You can effectively play against rocket-fuelled version of Your favourite opponent.

Download package is quite heavy, because it includes multiple opening books and NNUE file from Stockfish.

This is a one-shot upload, any improvements are unlikely.
Ed, with Chris, later made a new NNUE Net (only for Toga I think, not incorporated into an official Rodent) but also I think the link from Ed to Rebel13.nl will not lead to any download because the site is officially no longer under Ed's authorization.
Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.
