Reckless 0.8.0 and Zangdar ... could someone check that?

Post by Frank Quisinsky »

God knows why is the topic:

Reckless 0.8.0:
Same for the dev version Jim compiled before.
If I give the path to syzygy Shredder 12 GUI freezes, do nothing more.

Zangdar 4.04 and versions before:
Could someone try to start Zangdar with 128Mb for Hash?
Shredder 12 GUI freezes, do nothing more.
Works fine if I try 64Mb, 256Mb and so one.

Never I saw such a problem before.
Zangdar is such a fine engine but wants to annoy me.
There's a curse on my test PC, but I have a new OS Windows 11 installation!
Same on my other PCs.

Hm,

and you start Zangdar 4.04 with 128Mb for hash?
Shredder 12 GUI never produced such an error!!

OK, I will try out it with Cutechess, Bearchess and LucasChess today.
I am to old for all this!

:-)

Zangdar 4.0.4 ...
127Mb for hash or 129Mb for hash works.
Strange ... means, Zangdar with 128Mb and the crash with Shredder 12 GUI.

Reckless 0.8.0 ...
Same syzygy problem with the version Jim compiled for minutes.
GUI crashed, not important the path I give for syzygy with 3-4 pieces, 3-5 pieces, 3-6 pieces.

Using Reckless 0.8.0 under Arena, with default values, all is well. Displayed hash is 256 MB (my usual setting).

However, if I set the syzygy path, Reckless moves very slowly, and displayed hash is 0.

So something is definitely wrong with the engine. It does not matter if I use the author's build or Jim's one.

Using only 5-man syzygy, everything's OK again. It is using 6-man syzygy what causes the issue.

Hi Gabor,

no different between 3-4, 3-5, 3-6-man syzygy here.
In all cases, JA version or version by the programmer ... Reckless 0.8.0 / Shredder 12 GUI crashed.
At the moment I try out the Shredder 13 GUI only, same situation.

Hi Frank,

Under the Shredder GUI, if I use only 5 men, all is well. However, the engine crashes if I set 6-man syzygy tablebases.
It's odd that our findings differ.

Best wishes,

It was a compile issue with Reckless 0.8.0 - new exes have fixed it.
it appears that AVX2 binary when building TB Fathom C code was using march=native so AVX2 Binary contained usage of AVX512, since the machine it got built on supported AVX512. This is a small bug that is a Tax of using C code inside Rust. But can be handled conditionally
