Nice game by Nostradamus 0.4

Post by Tibono »

Hi all,
Should you want to know more about Nostradamus, please read here.

It plays decent chess, as an evidence I wanted to share this nice game, played vs Hegener&Glaser's Mephisto I, aka "Das Brikett", the famous 1980 chess computer. Its Computer Elo evaluation is 1.242 at active chess (30s/m) according to schach-computer.info rating list (equivalent to 1.323 FIDE Elo). Here it plays faster (level A2, 10s/m); using this level it is rated 1.248 CElo in my private list where all matches are played at 15s/m or 40/10 (moves/min). Nostradamus plays instantly (no tree-search). A win using dark pieces!

Thank you very much for sharing this, Tibono. It's great to see Nostradamus in action :D

I find this... fascinating. I didn't code any chess rules! I simply prepared a set of (FEN, best move) samples and defined a neural network architecture. I spent more time on how to convert these samples into numerical values — the 'vocabulary' involved in the 'tokenisation' process — but that wasn't difficult.

There's definitely a kind of magic behind the Transformers architecture

I'm sure that with more data, one could achieve better performance, but this would require better hardware...
