Luna Chess Engine (LCE) is a completely independent, modern project built from scratch in Rust with a custom NNUE evaluation. There is no connection with the older engine by Thomas Mergener. Thanks everyone for the support!
The Luna on our lists is also a chess engine so I can see no difference in their names barring that the initials are uppercase.
Hi Gabor,

Thank you for letting me know about the name collision in the database. To completely avoid any confusion with the older engine, please feel free to rename and register my engine as LCE (Luna Chess Engine) for your testing lists.

Let me know if that works for your automated systems.

Best regards,
Daniele

Hi Daniele,

The collision is entirely in my head only. Luna and Luna Chess Engine would be different entities for our processing scripts. E.g. Rebel, Rebel Centure, Rebel Extreme etc. do not cause problems, they are treated as different engines.

We could call it Luna CE. Then some might think it was from Central Europe which would suit me fine.

Could you not provide Windows exes? Most testers are not programmers and have Windows machines.

Hi Gabor,
"Luna CE" sounds absolutely perfect to me! Let's go with that.
I'll send over the Windows .exe on Monday. Have a great weekend!

Daniele

BTW, I tried to compile it but got this error message:
error: failed to parse manifest at `e:\Sakk\compiles\Luna CE\Luna-Chess-Engine-1.0.0\Cargo.toml`

Caused by:
no targets specified in the manifest
either src/lib.rs, src/main.rs, a [lib] section, or [[bin]] section must be present

Unfortunately CE is pretty common, so it's unlikely people would associate it with 'Central Europe'.

1st thing that immediately comes to mind:
Compact Edition (Microsoft): has been used for years for stripped-down, embedded versions of operating systems, such as Windows CE.
As an engineeer, Luna CE sounds sounds to me like it's written for Windows CE.

Note, there is a European connection: CE also stand for Conformité Européenne...
meaning the product meets European Union safety and environmental standards.

If remaining in the solar system is important to you...there are more than 850 celestial objects to choose from:

Why not just choose someting completely unique?

Just ask AI for what you could add to Luna to make it a unique name. It will give lots of suggestions.

Hi Gabor,
Ah, that error is the exact "repository mess" I mentioned in my forum post! Because I uploaded the files directly via the GitHub web UI, the folder structure is broken and main.rs is sitting in the root folder instead of being inside a proper src/ directory, so Cargo doesn't know where to look.
Please don't trouble yourself trying to build it from source right now. As promised, on Monday I will restructure the repository correctly and upload the pre-compiled Windows .exe directly to the Releases page so you can just plug and play.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Best regards,
Daniele

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the tech trivia and the naming suggestions!
To clear up the mystery: "Luna" has nothing to do with space, astronomy, or Microsoft. The engine is simply named after my cat, Luna. So I definitely don't need a Wikipedia list of celestial objects, and I certainly don't need an AI prompt to find a name for my pet.
Gabor and I already agreed on Luna CE (Luna Chess Engine). It keeps my cat's name intact and makes the CCRL database scripts happy, which is all that matters to me.
Now I'm officially turning off my devices and heading into the woods for a 3-day camping trip with my son.
Have a great weekend, see you on Monday!
Best regards,
Daniele
