Hello:

What a problem! I immediately found 1.- Qa1+, Kxa1; 2.- Kc1 (what else?), but did not see the bishop tour to enter the a1-h8 diahonal in the right square.

Chest 5.2 mate solver finds the #10 quickly with default settings:

Code: Select all

A post at TalkChess points to Sivkov as the author and date 1927.09.07, but I could not find anything more. Arves excellent site gives the full name Nikolay Ivanovich Sivkov.

OTOH, I found a similar theme thanks to the chess column of the best selling Spanish newspaper El País (link), with the following PGN in Spanish language:

Kd3 Nc4 4. Bc3 Nb2+ 5. Kd4 Na4 6. Bd2 g4 ({-o bien} 6... Kb2 7. Kd3 Kxa1 8. Kc2 g4 9. Be3 {y mate-}) 7. Bf4 Nc3 8. Be5 g3 9. Ke3 Nd5+ ({-o bien} 9... g2 10. Rg1 Kxb4 11. Kd3 Nd5 12. Kd2 Nb6 13. Bd4 Nc4+ 14. Kc2 Ka3 15. Kc3 Na5 16. Bg7 $1 Nc4 17. Bf6 Ne3 18. Be7+ Ka4 19. Kb2 {, ganando-}) 10. Kd3 Nxb4+ 11. Kd2 Nc6 12. Bf6 Na5 13. Rg1 Nc4+ 14. Kc1 {, ganando)}) 3. Kc1 $1 Ne4 4. Kc2 $3 {(la segunda clave es forzar g4 -el caballo está atado a evitar el mate en c3- para permitir la maniobra ganadora del alfil)} g4 5. Bh4 $1 g3 6. Bd8 g2 7. Bc7 $1 ({(pero no} 7. Bb6 $2 {por} Nc5 $3 8. Bxc5 g1=Q 9. Bxg1 {, ¡y tablas por ahogado!)}) 7... g1=Q 8. Be5+ Nc3 9. Bxc3# {, mate.} 1-0[/pgn]

The PGN points to a reprint at issue 139 of Finales... y Temas magazine in Spanish language, where both the PGN and the magazine (page 2992 of the magazine, this is, page 3 of the PDF) tells about author Aleksandr Konstantinovich Kalinin and published at Shakhmaty v SSSR magazine in 1957.

You can note in the mainline that after 8.- Be5+, the checkmate can be delayed a move with 8.- ..., Qd4; 9.- Bxd4+ before we reach the common final moves of 9.- ..., Nc3; 10.- Bxc3#. However, Chest 5.2 mate solver did not find #10 with default settings. Probably not a forced checkmate but a winning endgame after 1.- Rc1+, Kb2; 2.- Ra1, Nf5; 3.- Bf2, deviating from the given 2.- ..., Kxa1; 3.- Kc1.

Regards from Spain.

In HHdbVII it's given like this:
[pgn][Event "no ty"]
[Site "; Izvestia#216 7-9-1927"]
[Date "1927.09.07"]
[Round "?"]
[White "Sivkov=N"]

[Result "1-0"]
[SetUp "1"]
[FEN "8/6Qp/p5pP/P2n4/8/5p2/p2K1P2/1k2Bb2 w - - 0 1"]
[PlyCount "15"]
[GameId "2373949365461771"]
[EventDate "1927.09.07"]

{source: Izvestia#216 7-9-1927} 1. Qa1+ Kxa1 2. Kc1 g5 3. Bd2 g4 4. Bg5 g3 5. Bh4 g2 6. Bg3 g1=Q 7. Be5+ Nc3 8. Bxc3# 1-0
[/pgn]
So the longest DTM with Bishop- move at 2nd for Black isn't even mentioned there, only the for the author apparently more thematic 2...g5 (!?). We once in a while can see well the difference between composing puzzles for human beings and (mis)using them for "engine-testing"
:)

A bit surprising perhaps is the difference between Rebel with EAS (EAS 3.0 and old version of search) and Rebel without (version 17 with faster search) I think Rebel could accomodate the EAS network (needs recompile) and it clearly would help, even with matestudies!
I did not try other versions, like Rebel Maniac or Tal Assassin too scary :)
