Not really.

The amount of memory and study required for chess is enormous.

Talent will only get you so far... even in chess. Hard work and a real dedication to the game is required to be the elite.

I can't think of a single GM or IM that never studies openings or middle/end game positions.

I was kicked out of Chapters because I moved all the Bibles to the fiction section.

Most likely you can reach the top either way be it talent or a great work ethic. Capablanca wasn't known to burn the midnight oil studing chess where as Alekhine was known to have a great capacity for work. Botvinnik I imagine knows what it took to get him to the top. There will always be someone smarter or stronger but if you let them out work you it's your own fault. (Thats what I tell my kids anyhow)

My Best,

_No one can hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you can hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward….

I think that both are needed and ability to memorize is also a talent.
People forget things and a player who is better in memorizing that other people has a special talent.

I remember that I read that Alekhine said that in one game he does not care if he plays blindfold or see the board.

I think that you need to have a special talent to remember so well that in one game you can play blindfold without reduction in your playing strength.

It depends on the position Uri,I myself sometimes go to work having a crystal clear picture of the position left from the last night's unfinished game....In general we doctors must memorize a lot of things and our brain is well trained to do that 8-)

Thanks Dr. Deeb,

In becoming a doctor I'm sure you know the value of hard work in reaching goals.
