There are still some problems in using egbbs.
TogaII134(DM1-Compile) doesn't use egbbs for me.
TogaII134(DM2-Compile) doesn't use egbbs for me.
TogaII134(DM3-Compile) doesn't use egbbs for me.
TogaII134(DM4-Compile) doesn't use egbbs for me.

However there is a good news too:
TogaII(Original1.3x4b compile) uses egbbs.

kind regards

:?: Which compiles are suggested for an Intel D945 CPU, and which for an AMD AthlonXP 1900+ (older CPUs).

Also, what about the 3- and 4-piece bitbases (only), with version 1.3.4?
Hello Mike,

For Intel D945 my guess is you could just use the DM 3 compile because it is meant for the P IV, that is closest to the Intel D945. For AMD I think just use the DM2 for 32 bit Windows. But to be honest most speed differences, for the working versions with the respective processors that is, seem to be marginal in the list that Dennis supplied with the compiles.

About the bitbases my guess is that Toga 1.3.4 only works with the latest DLL from Daniel Shawul, and I seem to remember that DLL only works with all the Scorpio 5 men bitbases installed. The 5 men bitbase are 340 Mb I believe, so still manageable for a fair sized harddisk. You can do some experimenting but I fear Toga 1.3.4 will not work very well with just the 3 and 4 men bitbases. But I have not yet tried myself whether everything works!

Eelco
Correct!

First: In my eyes the version 1.3.4 is stronger in the analysis mode, that is only my opinion.

I have downloads (from Scorpio Homepage) all 3+4+5 men egbb's, and Toga II 1.3.4 works fine with this 360 MB 5-men full ending pieces.

Hello George,

The differences are probably very small but the idea was to make different compilations for different processors, using some processor instructions that are not standard. So it depends on what processor you have in your computer whether one of these versions will run on it (and the DM versions apparently are not supported by Windows 98). Dennis Mendoza has described the differences in the textfile that should be there along with the different versions: compiles.txt.

Speed differences are very very small and probably very hard to measure reliably, but not every version will run on your computer. If you have an AMD computer you will probably be fine with version DM 2 , also for older Intel PIII processors. There is another version for Intel P IV and one that is slightly better on Intel Core duo or Intel Centrino. Then there is the original compile that should work on most computers. My suggestion is to just try one of these that seems close to what you got, and if it works, it is probably not worth the effort to try one of the other compiles.

Regards, Eelco

P.S. For some reason a bitbase path like D:\egbb5\egbb or D:\egbb5\egbb does not work on my computer, when all 5 men bitbases and the DLL are in that last \egbb folder both on C: and on D: drive, but it works when I change it to
D:\egbb5\egbb\ or C:\egbb5\egbb\
Not sure why this is so, maybe because of another copy of the DLL that I put in the egbb5 directory?

Hehe - it's very conciderate... I guess I'm not the only one with more than computer, and a sweet selection of different CPU's

I think I now know why authors typically do not offer compiles targeted at hardware...

The results in the compiles.txt followed a couple of hundred hours of testing and were not 100% conclusive and did not cover all processor or o/s combinations :(

Basically analysis was run from a fixed position to a target depth for each compile and the time to ply compared.

Even on a machine with everything else stopped multiple runs produce slightly different results...

In my view Toga 1.3.1 is stronger for engine matches adjust the settings for blitz info in readme.

For endgame positions 1.3.4 is stronger even without egbbs according to tests I ran.

Code: Select all

Using the Eigenmann_Endspiel_Test 100 positions - thanks!!!
