So - be very wary of XP X64 - it is woefully supported - and seriously consider Vista X64. I have both, I have no real issues with Vista as long as you disable user account control...
Disabling the UAC in Windows Vista is reducing it's protection greatly, and increasing your boot times.
I have Vista 32bit on my laptop and while it can get annoying with UAC, there IS a reason it is functional.
The level of malware that installs itself without user intervention under Windows XP just doesn't happen on Vista.
Not stating I love it, but just the reason UAC is there.
