It's just a poor clone of a wannabe programmer, Ben Lau. Unfortunately I am not allowed to tell you what other names Ben Lau is useing, to post his nonsence at talkchess. Watch and draw your own conclusions...

Shredder 11 doesnt need a x-best mode, simple best move is enough!

That analysis was on a fast Quad. I suppose that it will skip this move if I would give it more time.

Fritz 10 evaluates d5 in the top 3 moves after about 10 seconds (using a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor). Then d5 disappears from the top 3 and reappears after about a minute. After 4 minutes, d5 is at the top of the list.

This position is considered in Silman's book, reassess your chess. The white d pawn is terrible and the black bishop is about to get real active. So white sacs the pawn, and in exchange gets a shletered spot for his knight on d4, and takes away some of bishops scope.

This is one of those positional sacs that is fairly rare for engines to play. Rybka sees it as a top 3 option , being only -.08 off the best option

That reminded me of the Karpov - Korchnoi game:

[d]2r1r1k1/5pp1/4nn1p/pp1p4/5PP1/2PRB2P/PPN5/1K1R4 b - g3 0 26

Where korchnoi played d4 and drew the endgame.

Do engines find that move?

Impressive! All commercial engines that I have(10 engines) choose
d4 in less than 3 min on my quad 6600. The majority plays d4 instantly.
Perhaps the better question was: What the programs that do
not play d4.

Hi !

This is not a great sacrifice ! In any decent chess course in strategy you can find the theme:
" Isolated pawn in center "
Here are only two options:
1. attack on the king position ( they are four conditions to do it );
2. open the center by d5 (d4) move ( if three conditions are carried out).

Only the lack of chess knowledges ( weak evaluation function of most of chess engines) generated such delay.The search function is like a blind man -feels every branch of the chess tree in every positions.The pruning function helps sometimes. Indeed they are long ways to a true strong chess engine.

Regards,
Silvian

Thus far, given:

2r1r1k1/5pp1/4nn1p/pp1p4/5PP1/2PRB2P/PPN5/1K1R4 b - g3 bm d4; c0 "Korchnoi";

Two engines have solved both positions (though about 2/3 find the second):
