It all depends one can say. If you are one of those who gets every version of Fritz, ChessBase, Shredder, Hiarcs etc then go for it. Some prefer to get one version e.g Fritz 9 skip 10 and then get 11. Others depending on the need for a free playchess account grab something from ChessBase.
The playchess main hall has thousands of players who might just have Fritz 8 but faithfully renew their accounts. The engine room where people have the latest and greatest versions has barely 100. Kaching Kaching either way.
IMO the premium CBLight looked like theft to me. You can bet many noobs bought it when it didn't come with a big database. Then again ChessBase make bundles from sales of anything so if it can be packaged in a CB logo it can be sold.

Re: ChessBase 10 Release Date
My only fear is that Chessbase will move to a more service based business model, where they move away from local Game Databases and go in favor of Online Game Databases only. Alot like online storage, if the site is down then your data is not availabe when you need it.
Online Databases, Online access to Endgame Tablebases, and Online Opening Books are not for me, I want my chess stuff kept local for when things go Offline.

I suppose online updates might be necessary for correspondence players and even OTB players as it is necessary to check on your opponents moves etc. ChessBase cannot move completely to online service just as there used to be unfouded talk of a Network Operating System run by the Microsofts/IBM's/Novells of this world (and you subscribe each year rather than buying Vista or Office).

CB 8 works just fine with my Vista system.AdminX wrote:Here is a chart that they (Chessbase) says compares the productsNimzovik wrote:Frankly I can see no spectacular reason to upgrade from chessbase 8 yet. Am I wrong here? When I bought chessbase 8 I spent more time generating reports comparing stats etc. that I did NOT study chess! The Rybka gui may be taking my money here....hmmmmmmmmm........maybe.

NOTE: Chessbase 9 works on my Vista system, even though they say it is not compatible.
WOW, UCI engine will now work as default engine. That should have been a bug fix, not a feature.

Re: ChessBase 10 Release Date
Did I read the graph that Ted linked to right? There is no online play chess membership for buying this thing? (Chessbase 10) Hmmmmmmm. I whole heartedly concur with everything being on line-i.e. databases endgames etc. I want my stuff on disk! Another issue -- UCI engine is the default....does that mean I can change the default engine to whatever engine I have?. I was REALLY wizzed when I bought chess base 8 and could'nt even switch engines! I assumed THAT would be STANDARD!
I am weary off what the advert does NOT say..........and indeed I am not sure what that would be till I get my microscope out OR until someone ELSE buys it first.
