That said, although generally I love Chessbase, their engine management is quite primitive and they haven't changed it in years. For example, once you've created an engine you can't change any of its parameters in the GUI.

Of course it goes without saying that you are completely wrong. But it never ceases to amaze me that even the people who- not like you, use chessbase guis regularly still don't understand how they work concerning parameters. And when I say this, I am NOT referring to going inside the 1kb Uci file created when you install the engine and adding any command concerning the number of threads. It is even simpler than that.
Unless someone will be changing a parameter setting back and forth- most do not understand they can make the change right there before they load the engine, and make any setting or number of settings the default any time they want to. I see users all the time- each time they load an engine to play- then they have to load a saved setting. And why? That just adds extra work on them and is a complete waste of time saving the setting and a bigger waste of time loading it.

gts.
I'm quite happy loading saved settings that are pertinent to each engine that I use in a gauntlet or tournament.
However, I'm sure that some other Fritz users would be keen to know your way of doing things, as it might suit them better.
I said it was not really practical if you were going to switch back and forth. Only make it before installation if they are change/changes you pretty much intend to keep. Like unchecking "own book" or other things like that you intend to be pretty much permanent. Of course then saving and loading settings is definitely a waste of good time. I think you would agree. You must have missed the part where I mentioned not switching back and forth a lot.

IMHO this is more a GUI issue than an engine author's fault. Fritz GUI is the only one (that I know at least, I tested arena, winboard and chessgui) to have this problem. Anyway, you can go to:
edit the *.uci files and rename the engines as you wish.
One of the things that bothers me the most about Fritz GUI is when you create a tournament and want that every engine participating use the same book limited to x moves. You have to do it editing every engine and change the book options for each one. There should be an option in unify book to edit the book for all engines participating.
The Up to move option after F4 only sets the book for the engine when you playing against it, but not for tournaments.
