AMD Threadripper 3970x is probably the best thing out there right now in terms of price/performance. It is a beast to cool. Liquid cooling is recommended, although I have managed to make mine run on air.

If price is no object you can go to something up the line from there (3990x, 3995WX or one of the Epyx chips), but that can get crazy expensive.
or more than one EPYC or more than one Threadripper if you wait for the Milan series...

M ANSARI wrote: Tue Feb 22, 2022 8:07 am Haven't been in the loop for a while and it is time to build a new computer. My last build I had an 8 core Intel which I upgraded the GPU with a 2080Ti card for NN. I see that SF now uses NN network without using a GPU and seems to be doing that well. Always thought that whoever manages to mix NN with Alpha Beta correctly will be the strongest. I plan to keep my 2080 Ti as I think it is plenty of GPU and now I just need a good CPU platform. I know there are 3080 Ti's out there now but I think if SF is doing so well without GPU that there is no need to upgrade that. Is it AMD or Intel that are best for SF at the moment? Also reading up on the Apple M1 chip and that looks extremely interesting as a low power high performance setup ... but if I go Apple I will probably just do it for a laptop.

Anyone make a recent power build recently? Can you share your specs and your thoughts!
Buy the MacBook Pro 16-inch M1 MAX.
It‘s more than amazing.
It‘s more than fast enough.
It‘s completely quiet. You can focus on chess!!
It‘s always cool, even when you have a very very very hot weather.
You can save a lot of money due to much lower watt usage per month and buy every year a new device.
Try also BanksiaGUI with ECA to analyse different things.

You can buy next month (08.03.2022 Apple event) the new MacBook Pro with M2 chip! + It comes also with ARMv9!!
I can't tell if you're serious or making a joke. Hopefully the latter.
I doubt that any of us have to get a better hardware unless you have a computer older than 20 years, My wife told me that when I can proof to her that I can beat Sf or the last version of Komodo, that I can have her permission to get a new computer, because she is sick and tire of every year for me to tell her the same excuse for updating my last year computer.

Note: Again I do not believe that he is making fun of you since he did not posted this video
You can tell her the same for shoes, clothing, makeup or decorating the house :.)

She is correct, of course. But it is a 'man's prerogative' to always seek new toys. I think biologist will find it baked into our DNA at some point...if they haven't already and just call it by a different name. Like '_____' (fill in your the blank). 8-)

No she isn't, not for analysis. Chess is a game about truth and a faster machine can get to that truth in less time.
Deep Fritz 10 will beat you every time, but no one analyses with it anymore.

First...unless you are on your deathbed, you can let an engine run a wee bit longer and get the same results.

Second...'Chess' is not about 'Truth' - it never has been. 'Truth' in a game of chess is a chimera; but the little boys live to chase it. It is...'their' prerogative and built into their DNA.

And finally...momma is always right. You should know that by now.

First: not so, for those who are busy and pro players they are constantly going through the latest games looking for new ideas. Time is money.

Second: Then you disagree with a lot of top players and their coaches, I heard verbatim that's what they teach now. Of course chess is about correctly understanding the position in front of you! What's you OTB rating?

Third: OK we agree a little bit

I knew you would go there...irrelevant as it may be.

My peak OTB was 2175. My peak ICCF was 2399...pre-computer era though....back when 2399 was something of an accomplishment

"Pro players" - Very...VERY few people are 'Pros', as in making a living at the game by playing it. I think that is the definition of a 'pro'.

Most 'pro players' are not at all interested in some abject "truth"...they simply want to find something (even if at times, a bit unsound - very 'untruth-like') with which they can sit down at a board and hope to catch an opponent out in so as to be more likely to score a point. Even in these online super tourneys, you can see the (relative) 'junk' they sometimes play. The other day: Mamedyarov a Budapest...Neop a Kings Gambit.

Those are 'pros'.
