Thanks. Funny enough my CPU is 8 cores with 8 threads (https://www.amd.com/en/products/apu/amd-ryzen-7-4700u), so I'm technically using no more than the number of actual cores I have. But I still think this is putting too much of a strain on the laptop. A concurrency of 6 may be the way to go with me...Modern Times wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 3:25 amI don't know what CPU you have. but say it is 4 cores, 8 threads. In my experience If you use 8 threads then each instance will have lower nps and lower search depth. I've run tests here with SF to demonstrate that on Ryzen and Intel. That extra thread capability is not a free lunch. They are competing for the same resource a lot of the time. And I've always wondered about the possibility of inconsistencies. On top of that, the CPU clock speed itself will likely slow down which of course slows the engines down too. For my own engine testing I do not go above the number of actual cores, although I know some do, e.g. Stefan Pohl, Carlos etc.algerbrex wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 2:45 am So, I ran another gauntlet with Leorik out of curiosity, and I'm starting to become convinced concurrency and my laptop's peculiarities are playing a role in some of what I'm observing.
So I had started running a gauntlet with a concurrency of 8, and it was 2/3 of the way through, with 8.6.5 behind Leorik by about ~40 Elo points, before I misremembered that I had used a concurrency of 4 for the original gauntlet.

Ah so you don't have that core/thread complication. Concurrency 7 should be fine then, as long as the laptop isn't doing anything else and is adequately cooled. What could be happening under full load too is dips in clock speed to control thermals. But you will know all of this.algerbrex wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 3:31 am

Yeah, I think that the concurrency amount should work and be safe enough. And right, I suspect that the CPU is dipping the clock speed because of the heat, so I've tried to spend some time making sure things are cool enough.Modern Times wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 3:40 am Ah so you don't have that core/thread complication. But you will know all of this.
I took J.T's suggestion from another thread as well about sitting my laptop on two thick books to allow the fan to get in a lot more air, and it's worked very well actually. Even without my desktop fan that I normally use, my laptop isn't even warm to the touch, it's room temperature. And I'm concurrently finishing a test that's using a concurrency of 8, so I'm maxing out the number of cores. So in addition to running the fan when needed, I shouldn't have too many heat issues going forward, although I'll still need to be careful. So going forward I think a concurrency of 7 is what I'll try to use.

Re: Progress on Blunder
Yes, I raise the rear of my laptop when it is under heavy load, that is where it draws air in underneath in my case. It reduces temps a little and it can maintain a consistent clock speed.
One trap I fell into was to leave the lid closed when hooked to an external monitor. In that situation it runs quite a bit hotter.

I used a laptop stand that reduces temps a lot and it also maintaining a consistent clock speed when I'm using the stand. Very much cooler than without a stand.Modern Times wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 4:34 amYes, I raise the rear of my laptop when it is under heavy load, that is where it draws air in underneath in my case. Re: Progress on Blunder
I haven't had much time to work on Blunder or browse this forum lately, as I've gotten quite busy between my studies, extracurricular responsibilities, and work. But I have had a little time to play around with the evaluation, and one idea I've settled on exploring more thoroughly is adding more PSQT, and their usage is dependent on the position of the king.
As a basic idea I opted for something pretty simple. I've added 12 new PSQT to Blunder, so 12 for the middlegame and 12 for the endgame. And the deciding factor between which set is used is which side the king's castled on. I've changed the evaluation and the tuner for the most part, but there are still a couple of tweaks I need to make before I can tune and test.
I suspect with the addition of these new tables, I might need to try bumping up my dataset from ~1M positions to something like ~1.25M or ~1.5M, just to get some more data to better tune all of the additional weights. But this idea seems like it should be a decent Elo gain in theory, as the position of the king, as is known, is a big determining factor in how a certain position should be evaluated.
Anyway, I'm excited to play around with this idea and see how it goes. I probably won't be going to much more extreme, but may try some different variations, all centered around adding more weights for different king positions.

Re: Progress on Blunder
I'm curious how it works out for you! I experimented with the idea before but didn't get it to work and blamed it on a too small dataset. I still use the one from Zurichess. In the short-term I'm planning to train Leorik up from the ground (start with Material-only PSTs and generate training data that way) and if that works out I would have no problem to generate a bigger dataset and try some more ambitious ideas.
But at that point it's also the question if more PSTs is really the most sensible approach or if it isn't better to go to a very simple NNUE. E.g. 64 * Pieces * Color = 768 inputs. Then a hidden layer of 64 or 128 fully connected weights. Doesn't strike me as much more complex than different sets of PSTs but probably more promising.
I have no clue about the details of NNUE though an it's sadly not widely discussed on these forums... I guess one step at a time right? Anyway, looking forward to your results!

I planned on using my extended dataset extended again with more self-play positions from Blunder's testing games, or using an Ethereal dataset to make sure I have plenty of training data.
And I'm definitely very tempted to start working on a simple NN, not even NNUE, as a way to start experimenting. It should be relatively straightforward I think. I'm more familiar with a lot of the math behind it so that shouldn't be a big issue. My initial approach was going to be to a 768 -> 16 -> 1 NN, but I want to experiment with the size of the 1 hidden layer. Which would mean I'd be tuning around ~800-900 weights, which is a couple hundred weights less than adding more king-dependent PSQT.
So I may actually just put my original idea on hold and get a simple NN up and running. The only thing I still need to do is figure out how backpropagation works so I can use it to tune the network. I'm not sure how different it is then gradient descent. I've found some good resources for understanding it though so hopefully this weekend I can get something crude working that I can train.
I suppose for an initial training I'll use 1M-2M positions and see how that does, since like I mentioned, I'm actually tuning around the same number of weights I am right now.

Re: Progress on Blunder
Thanks, interesting game. I'll have to review it more closely when I have the time.Chessqueen wrote: ↑Tue Aug 30, 2022 10:04 am[pgn][Event "Rook Vs knight Odds"]algerbrex wrote: ↑Tue Aug 30, 2022 8:58 am I haven't had much time to work on Blunder or browse this forum lately, as I've gotten quite busy between my studies, extracurricular responsibilities, and work.
