I've been readying this comment a lot lately by different members, I wonder how many consider Thinker their top 1 engine. :)
It is my favourite too. If the author turns on PV while it is thinking, it will make my top analysis engine.

Thinker has a wonderful attacking style, with very different evaluation of sharp positions. Then, it is a tremendous endgame player compared to other attacking engines. This makes it a great engine.

It attacks in middlegame-if it goes well, it crushes the opponent. If the opponent holds, Thinker is able to transpose into inferior endgame and hold it or win it. If I have to pick a human champion for a playing style analogy, I would say-Thinker is more like Fischer rather than Tal.

It's a really exciting engine. If there is an output that can be usable for analyzing, it will instantly become my No.1 analysis engine.

Here is a recent turnament on my Core2 Duo.

Btw, can anyone tell me how to make a rating list in Arena from a tournament PGN?
I am using Arena 1.99 beta, is 1.1 better?

I think that the best program for accurate ratings lists is Bayeselo (Because it takes color into account, and number of games played, etc.)

You can download it here:

http://remi.coulom.free.fr/Bayesian-Elo/#download

People may be scared by its DOS nature, in where you need to type in a command line, but the output is worth it:

Instructions:

1. Have the PGN file in the same folder than bayeselo.

2. Double click or hit enter to run the program.

(In this example, the pgn is named "games.pgn")

3. type:

readpgn games.pgn

And hit enter.

4. Input the following in the same way:

elo
mm
exactdist
offset 2500

Note that the 2500 is used as a base for the ratings, but can be any number.

ratings

This will let you see a preview of the output. If you are happy do:

ratings>games.txt

This will create a text file with the ratings. If you're not happy you can recalibrate by using offset #### with another number instead of 2500.

And that's all :), credits go to Tony Thomas for figuring it out!

I would LOVE to have the PV output in a Chessbase GUI, like Fritz so that I can see what the engine is thinking.

Also, I can't get 5.1e to ponder in a Chessbase GUI, but it ponders in Shredder GUI (by using the same Wb2Uci file in both cases). Any idea?

I wanted to test version 5.1E but it doesn't run in Windows 98 SE, which I'm still using on my old test computer... But it runs fine in Vista 32, except for the missing infos.

It must have felt insulted by you to run it under a 10 year old operation system

Almost all engines run in Win98, but there is a typical problem: Many cannot allocate 256 MB (or more) hash. This means, engines like Rybka which only use 2^x values can only use max. 128 MB in Win98. Some are programmed in a way though, that they do not have this restriction at all. Some others cannot use 256 but up to 255.

But in engine matches, usually I don't use more than 2x128 MB anyway, since the total RAM is 512 MB on this computer.

Actually the credit goes to the instructions manual which we often do not read.

Well then: "Credits go to Tony Thomas for relaying to us the instructions from the manual!"
