I play chess960 against bots on Lichess.

Most of them are way too strong for me. I do not mind losing, I just do not want to lose every single game.
On the other extreme, there are some very weak engines. To the point that it neither fun nor instructive (for me) to play against them.
There is something missing there: some middle strength engines that also play chess960.

Greetings.
MiniHuman and leela2200 both play FRC and may be in that Goldilocks range you’re looking for.
Hi.

My score against MiniHuman is 0-10.
My score against leela2200 is 0-10.
Ok, I have actually had some reasonable positions against leela2200, but then I simply spoil them.
In other games, I just blunder in the opening, and lose quickly.

Greetings.

Oh yes, I felt the same way when I was playing standard chess quite a few years ago when lichess bots were in the primitive stage. The whole scenario was dominated by accounts with ultra optimized stockfish in superior hardware, or an engine that just plays by rules.I was disappointed as I was specifically looking for engines rated about 2300 to 2500 in CCRL scale.

Lichess is very convenient compared to playing against the engine on desktop. You get more motivated to play against them on lichess as opposed to playing with them on laptop. I don't know, but it feels that way. Maybe it's the age of mobile and the need for immediate game play on the go, anytime and anywhere.

I certainly hope many engines get listed there eventually. Fast forward to 2022, I am happy to see many engines out there in the rating range that I am looking for. Maybe in future, you will feel the same way about FRC.
Hi.

I agree, it is somehow more "fun" to play against an engine on a chess server, than on my own computer.
I only play rated games. I am aware that rating points on a chess server are just useless; but still...
On my own computer, I get the feeling that it just does not matter.
But of course, on a server it does not matter either (:
Go figure.

Greetings.

I didn't realize there were many bots on LIchess. I play with "Play Computer" and I usually put it on Level 6 ... and time is 1 min +6 seconds. I have tried Level 7 but it is very frustrating at that time control and have only managed to draw a few games at Level 7. Level 6 is fun as it is extremely strong tactically ... but every once in a while it will sac material which you have to refute and then is an easy win. Level 6 I feel plays at like 3200 ELO sometimes and then 1400 ELO at times (especially in endgame). How do you go about playing the bots? Where are they located on Lichess?

Check this list https://lichess.org/player/bots, you can challenge any bot you want and they usually accept. Just be cautious when looking at their ranks, they're a bit off as people in this thread said earlier.

I have a bot in lichess called cdroid at https://lichess.org/@/cdroid

The engine is not yet released though, still trying to improve it. Calculation of suboptimal moves frequency and magnitude in a complicated position and not making obvious suboptimal moves are challenging.

This is not by any means the complete list. However, it consists of engines which are online most of the time, hence making it easier to play against it.

Yes, Playing "Level" games with Stockfish, or any other engine is not fun. It's really inconsistent both in game, and strength. A true 1800 rated engine will give a good challenge to the 1800 player, and it will be very reliable and consistent with the game play, and you can easily get the feel that you have improved your game after many encounters with it and you get the upper hand in games over time, and you will begin looking for engines 50-100 elo above it.
