The domain itself doesn't have any value. It's the archived discussion of many years that's worth anything. Even that can be scraped and archived if needed. Esp if the current owners starts being difficult.

There are deep links in the web to talkchess.com you will loose all those, and, as already mentioned, "Verify you are a human", even if it is legally OK to scrape current TC, I am not able to perform this action, give me a database with forum id, thread id, post id, and user id, and I might be able to import into demo forum, or alike.out

Most likely a waste of time. HGM tried that a while back only to have it torpedoed by Rebel telling the forum owner. You can look at the discussions in the forum for more info. I think everyone who followed Rebel’s behavior is both confused and pretty tired of it.
It was a misunderstanging, caused by technical difficulties with Ed's e-mail. I don't remember exact details but you can ask Ed and HGM. Ed explained and apologized, publicly. You can look at the discussions in the forum for more info.

We need the permission from the owner of course or everything is dead in the water.
I myself share the opinion that all content on current TC falls under public domain, but I will respect the shop's point of view on this, if shop says scraping is a no go I am out.

Why would Quentin (or whoever) be opposed to just allowing someone to download the forum db. It's hard to believe they would be concerned with losing site traffic at this point by it being available elsewhere. Maybe I have been out of the loop for too long? Has he specifically mentioned privacy concerns?

Ed mentioned that up to now he did not receive any reply, so he can not ask if this could be an option. HGM did indicate that shop might be interested in selling domain+DB, if shop delivers DB for free, it might lower value? HGM did set up once an clone of TC, fixed all issues, then took it offline again, cos of shop intervention most likely. HGM's current statement:

Not at all. I am just not part of the solution anymore. Expect no initiative from me if all you know to do is to discredit me for it. If you are not happy with the current situation, fix it yourself!

To discuss every detail with all ~3600 registered members in here and put everyone in the loop won't work...Ed's poll is running since a ~month, and no consensus in sight...

I interpret this as clear signal that the majority of members is not interested in a new forum and wants to stay on current TC. The new kids on the block moved on to Discord channels anyway.

I stand by my offer @moderators, @founders, @shop, webprogramming+DB+Linux, if there is anything I can fix let me know, PM me.

The shop communicated Quentin is back on June 15, I suggest we wait for his response.

But in the light the shop wants to get rid of the forum we should be keen to take action and don't wait too long, we don't want to fall the forum into the wrong hands.

I am pretty sure many of the no-voters at the time of voting did not realize what is at stake, if negotiations fail, which I expect (only 2 donations), talkchess.com goes on sale for the highest bidder or will be closed.

As said, I will wait for Quentin to respond and if negotiations fail I will organize a new poll.

Then let's wait and listen to what shop has in mind.

UPDATE

Talks with the shop were positive, 6 members donated a considerable amount of money and the shop accepted. Meaning, the forum will be owned again as it was setup in November 1997, thus owned by the forum members, the domain name as well. No data loss, in fact Srdja scraped the old CCC online archive from 1997-2006 meaning we will have the complete history since November 1997. Meanwhile a new Founder Group has formed of 4 people, Chris, Srdja, HGM and me. The FG will be responsible for the transfer, making talkchess.com safe (hacker proof), calling for moderator elections. When there is more news we will inform you.

Mine's OK. Check that the image URL in your profile is still there.

Congratulations on taking control of the forum! 8-)
