So where did you get the 4k from?

BTW it wouldn't make much sense to give out a "4k crown", because there are large differences in MIPS rating.

For example, I'm playing with (planning to write a chess program for it) an Ubicom SX28 (xgamestation Pico), which runs at 80 MHz, with 2k of Flash (and 126 bytes of RAM). The bigger brother SX52 has 4k of Flash.

I was amazed, however, to find that Star Beryl solved this position in a mere 12 seconds! Yes, that's 12 seconds for a mere 4K program running on an incredibly modest processor that can't even hope to compete with a 6301Y, let alone a 6502

Out of sheer curiosity, what processor does it run on?

it is not so clear exactly the processor
it is a single chip but Novag does not say which single chip processor

since Novag likes to utilize the H8 processor my guess would be a single chip H8

One of the things I intend to get around to is a 10 game match at 40 moves in 2 hours with the Mephisto II I won on eBay.

What Mephisto II?

I expect Mephisto II to convincingly win the match, however I expect the little Beryl to give MII some scary moments with it' surprisingly fast tactical selective search and tricky little openings book.

How much do these Star Beryls cost in Germany out of curiosity?

70 Euro is the normal price.

PS: Beryl really needs about 45 seconds per move minimum to play decent, passable chess - but unlike most chess computers, it benefits much more from the full 3 minutes.

That's not so good for me, as i prefer Active chess...

Yes, Beryl is not at all a good choice for active chess, but then again, nor is the 16K Carnelian II / Star Opal. It takes a Star Ruby or higher in Novag's current range for strong active chess. On the other hand, it's nice to see a computer that seems to enjoy a linear improvement in playing strength the longer it thinks for.

For people like me who only run 40/2 tournaments, the above issue is not too much of a problem though.

What I now would like Novag to do is release this same program in a Deluxe model - perhaps the 2007 equivalent of the ultra-rare Novag Solo Deluxe Or, ANY other housing to be honest - anything to get around the unreadable dsiplay issue (which some people might consider quaint, but I consider to be a pain in the derriere )
